In week 17 of the 2015 season, a tough blow was dealt to both the Texans and Duane Brown when the veteran offensive tackle went down with a torn quadricep against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Brown has been focused on rehab to get back full strength in preparation for the upcoming season.
Staying as close as he can to the action over the past five weeks, Brown has been heavily involved with team activities.
“Duane has been in every meeting,” Texans head coach, Bill O’Brien, said. “He’s out there. Once he gets his rehab done, he comes out for the team portion of practice. He’s talking to the young guys behind the huddle. He’s talking to Brock about maybe some adjustment that he made during the play. Duane is a leader.”
O’Brien mentioned that “hopefully” Brown will return for training camp and that would be a good sign on getting him back for the start of the season. For the time being, veteran offensive tackle Chris Clark will man the left tackle position until Brown returns.
Despite not being on the field, O’Brien feels that Brown could benefit from watching the team work which, in turn, could help him see things differently than before.
O’Brien explained, “I think in some ways for guys that are that many years in the league, to have a spring where maybe they’re observing, I think it helps guys like that when they’re at that stage of their career.”
The key is to make sure Brown is healthy and ready when he comes back to the team. The Texans are not going to rush back any player to risk further injury, but the break to the start of training camp will be important for Brown’s recovery.
