Tom Savage is entering his third season with the Texans as the only quarterback drafted by Bill O’Brien. Savage has been plagued by injuries. The one from his rookie season came on a low hit from a defender. His shoulder injury in his second season came from a blown assignment in pass protection which resulted in a shoulder injury. Despite missing so much playing time, Savage continues to get better in the offense and has progressively looked more comfortable on the field during practice situations.
Savage lost his second season after being injured (shoulder) in the final preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys. The Texans ended his year by placing him on the injured reserve and that, unfortunately, kept the organization from seeing what he had as a quarterback. There is little doubt Savage would have seen the field last season if he was not placed on injured reserve but a new year brings new promise. In his third training camp, he looks comfortable with the offense and it shows with how well he commands the offense. He has had a steady progression since his rookie season and it is clear that he is ready for bigger things in 2016.
Roster Situation: Savage has the clear path to be the team’s backup quarterback. With all of the change in the quarterback room, Savage remains the constant, which should not be overlooked.
