2016 Houston Texans Player Profile: John Simon

A closer look at the Houston Texans roster heading into the 2016 training camp.

The Rundown

John Simon was the reason the Texans let Brooks Reed walk prior to the start of the 2015 season, and he has shown to be an adequate replacement. Simon was claimed off the Baltimore Ravens practice squad in 2014, with linebacker coach Mike Vrabel being instrumental in his arrival. Vrabel, who coached Simon in college, trusted what he knew of him and instantly put him in the lineup for the Texans.

Simon is a nice piece at the outside linebacker position, in which he can start in base defense and do the dirty work in nickel and dime to free up other pass rushers. He has to play sound fundamental football to hold the edges and contain faster players, even though he showed some lapses in this area last season. Teamed with Whitney Mericlus and Jadeveon Clowney, Simon rounds the group out well and gives the defense three legitimate options on the edge each defensive series.
