The Texans were on the look out for a center during the college season and were focused on landing one in the draft. They drafted Nick Martin in the second round, continuing the team’s focus on investing in the offensive line. Martin marks the second offensive lineman drafted by the Texans in the second round over the past three seasons and there are expectations that go along with that. Martin was considered one of the best interior offensive lineman coming out of college in the draft and the Notre Dame product can help at center and guard.
The Texans drafted Martin with both the present and long term future in mind. Martin will be expected to win the center position and be ready to start week one. There will be nothing handed to him but it will take camp to show that he can handle what is being asked of him. Getting Martin in place is key for the growth of the offense and, his being Brock Osweiler’s number one center will be good for continuity in the offense.
Just a matter of time before he takes over at center.
