An extended look at Houston Texans training camp day three.
Griffin is coming off an achilles injury this off-season and is just not getting it going on the field. With some consistency issues, Griffin is not taking over at the position and is not standing out among his group. The Texans need help at tight end but Griffin is struggling early in camp.
As for Shorts, he has been lost in the shuffle of youth for the Texans. Shorts is getting looked over in favor of the younger players and he is going to have to overlcome both Jaelen Strong and Keith Mumphery to have a chance. The majority of the receiver group has made at least one “wow” play while Shorts is floating through for the time being. It is still early but the clock is ticking and Shorts better start stringing together some good days to make an impression.
Jadeveon Clowney was the clear winner today at training camp. In shortened terms, here is why.
- On goal line, Clowney came off the edge to meet Lamar Miller in the backfield before he could even take two steps with the ball, resulting in a tackle for a loss.
- He ran down Miller and stopped him short of scoring to end the goal line session.
- He ran down Akeem Hunt who broke loose on a run and he ended up causing a fumble by chasing him down.
Those were all within the first thirty minutes of practice. It was an impressive day for Clowney.
Stephen Anderson got his first action at trying to block at the NFL level in the run game and had to lock up with Whitney Mercilus and Clowney. It wasn’t pretty. Anderson has to learn how to block at this level and that will be something to watch moving forward. The Texans are working hard to keep him in the fold and giving him every chance to make this team.
The Texans are working fast to make sure Tyler Ervin is going to be their primary returner for the season. Ervin is healthy and showed some of his return ability today during camp, a good sight for a team that has struggled in special teams for some time. When he has the ball in his hands, his lateral quickness to get side to side is something to see. His ability has a Darren Sproles feel to it.
Kevin Johnson is having some highs and lows the first three days of camp. He is still trying to control his aggression on the field, making sure he jumps routes at the right time versus getting caught flat footed so receivers can run by him. Wendall Williams ran by him yesterday but today Johnson had Williams' number in coverage and shut him down on the field. Johnson is currently working against A.J. Bouye for more practice time and that current battle is being won by the much more polished Bouye.
Akeem Hunt struggled some today and it started with ball security. He fumbled when Clowney punched it away from him only to have the ball be recovered by the defense. His time is limited with Lamar Miller and Alfred Blue getting most of the reps on the field.
D.J. Reader showed he might be able to play in this league, not like that was ever a real question. In goal line he was all in the back field and burst through the defense to create a tackle for loss. Then in pass rush drills, he showed some ability to get to the quarterback. He has a good initial hand placement in his rush and he is able to keep offensive lineman’s hands off of him. It was a good day for the rookie from Clemson.
