In terms of one of the most talented groups on the practice field for the Houston Texans, look no further than the wide receiving corps. Highlighted by DeAndre Hopkins, Jaelen Strong, and rookies Will Fuller and Braxton Miller, the Texans wide receiver talent is at its best in sometime.
“All I see is potential and I am ready to add on. If we all do the right thing, we will be ok,” explained rookie wide out, Tevin Jones.
There will be plenty of players to pay attention to as the preseason goes on but one to keep an eye on is rookie Tevin Jones. The former Memphis Tiger was a go to target in his collegiate offense and now he is starting over since arriving with the Texans.
“I came a long way, I still have long way to go,” said Jones. “I have had a couple mess ups out here but I mean, we are getting better every day.”
At each practice, Jones has been making plays and putting in solid work in a crowded receiver group. Like all rookies, adjusting to the mental part of the game and getting the playbook down for each day of practice has potential to stunt the growth of these young players.
“The playbook is a big adjustment. Just like in college, you have learn how to study and do it the right way,” explained Jones. “When I got here, I had to continue doing that.”
Understanding the plan day to day is what Jones has excelled at and it has paid off for him through the start of camp. Consistency continues to be the key for Jones and making plays on the field is what he has done.
“The early work is putting the playbook to work, that is the hard thing. After that it falls into place.”
Where Jones fits is yet to be seen, but the moment does not appear to be too big for him. Keeping up with the pace with other wide receivers will help him out when the tough decisions arrive. It has been a solid start to training camp for Jones but, like all the rookies, it is a challenging progression.
“I am just happy to be out here and take everything one step at a time.”
