Racking up 12 carries and 40 yards in the preseason opener with a catch that went for 17 yards, Kenny Hilliard has evolved into an NFL caliber running back after a strong off season. Taking advantage of a shoulder injury that is affecting Alfred Blue’s availability, Hilliard received a good amount of reps and his playing time paid off.
Bill O’Brien even took notice of the work that Hilliard put in during the preseason opener.
“Yeah, no question. Kenny had a lot of opportunities in the game and I thought he ran well,” said O’Brien. “I think he has to make sure that he takes care of the ball. He knows what he needs to do a little better on special teams. That’s part of his role.”
The running back position has showcased a good competition due to the amount of talent in the group. Now, Hilliard adds his name to the hat in the push for a roster spot.
“Kenny had a good practice here today,” said O’Brien. “That position is very competitive. That thing is going to be a tough decision for us when we figure out how many we want to keep.”
Here was Hilliard after practice talking about multiple topics.
