Houston Texans Start Trimming Their Roster to 75 Players

The Houston Texans have started making moves to get their roster to the league mandated 75 players.

The Houston Texans have trimmed their roster to 75 to meet the NFL's guidelines before Tuesday. All moves are considered unofficial until the team announces.

Alex Carrington was released at the beginning of the week of the third preseason game, which put the roster at 89 heading into the roster moves later in the week.

The First Round of Moves

Lonnie Ballentine was placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list which will hold him out for at least six-weeks during the regular season. Still recovering from a knee injury sustained last season, the recovery has been slow but steady. The Texans are not ready to call it a season on the safety and giving him a chance to potentially return this season.

The Houston Texans also will place Kurtis DrummondKa'imi Fairbairn and Nick Martin on the injured reserve to help get the roster down heading to Tuesday. Drummond is dealing with a lower leg injury, Fairbairn a quad injury and Martin with the ankle issue that required surgery.

The Unofficial Cuts

Ra'Zahn Howard was added to the Texans prior to the start of training camp, after he left Purdue early due to academic reasons. His weight and conditioning were an issue and it showed with the Texans when he arrived. He was already behind the eight-ball with everyone else in camp a full month into the conditioning program. Howard's future will be based on the Texans or another team feeling he has a upside as a player.

Josh Lenz' situation was not about ability it was about timing and no real room to push for a 53-man roster spot. The Texans let him go now rather than wait to find another team if possible. Lenz is out of practice squad eligibility due to spending three years on the practice squad since coming out of Iowa State in 2013. That is the maximum number of years allowed by the CBA for players who have not appeared in a NFL game. Lenz best hope is that he can latch onto a 53-man roster somewhere else in the league.

The Texans liked what the rookie outside linebacker Carlos Thompson brought to the roster making the 53-man roster out of camp. Thompson was a converted defensive end that made a solid transition to the position but this season there was not much improvement from his game as a pass rusher. There were clearly better options on the roster for the Texans at the position.

The Texans will also move on from right tackle Arturo Uzadavinis, inside linebacker Ryan Langford, offensive tackle Matt Pierson and wide receiver Tevin Jones

The Texans have at least three more moves in the coming days.
