The speculation turned into a reality with J.J. Watt returning to practice for the Houston Texans today at the Methodist Training Center. Watt has been dealing with a back injury he suffered prior to the start of training camp. 49 days later, he now takes the practice field, working out with teammates.
There was a two-month recovery time for Watt’s procedure and, when the Texans kick off the season against the Chicago Bears, it will be a full 55 days since his procedure. In a matter of two weeks, Watt went from lifting, to passing his conditioning test, to passing his physical, which now has him on track for week one.
Bill O'Brien said Watt will play on Sunday but did not say how much he will citing concerns with his conditioning levels with missing so much training camp.
Watt is the reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year and, in 2015, he had 76 total tackles with 17.5 sacks.
