The Houston Texans made a quick move after the Green Bay Packers game to modify their cornerback group. With the exit of Charles James, the Texans claimed Al-Hajj Shabazz off of waivers from the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Shabazz has been on a whirlwind ride over the past couple days to arrive in Houston and prepare for Sunday’s game against the Indianapolis Colts.
“The last 48 hours, it’s been crazy. I’m tired, didn’t get any sleep, but we have other times for that, man. We’ll get rest later. It’s not the time for it,” explained Shabazz.
Shabazz was in Pittsburgh ready to return to the Steelers practice squad before he was told the Texans claimed him to the 53-man roster to help immediately on special teams and possibly see time on the field on Sunday.
“They were like, ‘No, man, you’re going to Houston,’” explained Shabazz. “So, everybody’s sending congrats. I didn’t really have time to really dwell on anything. Look, go home, pack a bag, I’ll be at the airport. Welcome to Houston.”
The Philadelphia native is getting help from familiar faces like Jaelen Strong and Will Fuller who grew up in the same city as Shabazz. With so much work to be put in, Shabazz no longer has a paper playbook like the Steelers gave him; he now has to use the Texans iPad system.
“I don’t have a playbook anymore – it’s an iPad – so I have to hit that iPad all night tonight and get with a couple of the veteran guys, and I think we’ll be OK,” said Shabazz.
With the Texans pushing for the AFC South title, Shabazz is here to show he will do whatever the coaching staff asks of him.
“I’m telling you right now, whatever the coaches need me to do, I’m with it. I told them I’m coming to work.”
