Cornerback A.J. Bouye was delving into uncharted waters, entering his second season when Bill O’Brien arrived in 2014. Having overcome a multitude of obstacles, his ascension to becoming one of the top players for the Texans defense has been well documented in 2016, especially with the injuries that have occurs at the position group.
Bouye has had an up and down career which saw him go from the injured reserve his rookie season to receiving a high number of snaps in 2014, only to have his snaps cut dramatically in 2015 with the arrival of Kevin Johnson.
Then 2016 rolled around and Bouye’s role changed, going into the season as a defensive back with a safety flair to start. Covering some of the best tight ends in the league, Bouye gained cofindence early in the season. With injuries to Kevin Johnson and Kareem Jackson, the defense had to move Bouye back to his original position of cornerback and he took off, with some of the best coverage play the team has had in sometime.
“He’s one of the most improved players we’ve had over the three years that we’ve been here. He’s improved his skillset, he’s improved his body type, he’s gained more lean mass, if that makes sense,” said Bill O’Brien of Bouye.
Bouye himself credits his and his teammates' success and growth as players to the coaching they are getting week to week.
“That’s one thing about us, we’re always talking in the meeting room and we’re taking coaching,” explained Bouye. “We carry it over to practice and then we practice like it’s a game. We take pride in all that. We just go out there and compete like we always do.”
Bouye has plugged away to make himself one of the best defenders on the Texans as he enters a contract year. Things are lining up at the right time for Bouye to become a premier target for other teams in the NFL if he hits the open market. One thing for sure is that Texans are taking what Bouye is doing in 2016 and enjoying the work he has been putting in.
O’Brien continued regarding Bouye's development: “He’s been into it every day in practice, in games he’s playing with a lot of confidence. It’s a credit to A.J. that he’s been able to play that way this year.”
