It has been a whirlwind few days for Houston Texans quarterback Tom Savage after his 2.5 quarters of football on Sunday brought the team back to a 21-20 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars. Bill O’Brien named Savage the starting quarterback early this week to allow him to get experience with everything that comes with being a starting NFL quarterback.
The demands on Savage have grown in less than a week. He is running the offense with the 1st team, holding press conferences with local, visiting team, and national media, and most importantly, feeling the pressure Savage is putting on himself to perform. The once quiet backup is now front and center, trying to lead the Texans to an AFC South crown and the team’s second consecutive playoff berth.
It’s an awesome opportunity,” said Savage in his first press conference with the media since being named the starter. “I’m really excited about it but right now, I’m just taking it day-by-day and trying to stay away from the Kool-Aid a little bit, and just go out there and execute my job and have some fun.”
Throwing for 260 yards and completing a shade over 62% of his passes, Savage showed he can help the offense. Now, with expectations growing, Savage has to show he can do it week to week and, with his first NFL start on deck, all eyes will be on this performance.
“I mean, it’s a great opportunity to go out there and kind of show what I can do,” said Savage of his first NFL start. “Really, just like I said, I have to go out there and execute what I need to do. I’m going to have some fun doing it and just go rip it.”
Savage remembers his first game as a rookie when he went in against the Indianapolis Colts and had a day he would like to soon forget. Struggling with the simple things like handoffs and completing passes, Savage left that game with a knee injury after a low hit from a defender. Now, Savage refuses to let his team down after that brief time on the field in 2014.
"They deserved that that year when I went in as a rookie to go in there and be prepared, and I wasn’t going to make that mistake again,” explained Savage. “Not just for myself and my personal opportunity, just for the guys because that’s what Duane (Brown) and J.J. (Watt) and all those guys, they deserve someone to go in there and execute and be prepared just the way they do and try to help them win a game.”
