For the second season in a row, Brock Osweiler has been deemed the starter for two different teams and ended up being benched due to uninspiring play. Osweiler has been plagued with interceptions and inaccurate passing this season and, after being benched in favor of Tom Savage, Osweiler sat on the sidelines for a span of three weeks.
Benched mid-game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, Osweiler had his number called in the final game of the season when Savage was knocked out with a concussion. It has come full circle for Osweiler. Unlike his final season with the Broncos, this time he is getting a chance to clean up some uninspiring play from the regular season.
“Obviously nobody wants to be benched but I have experienced that before, so you’re exactly right. I think I handled it much better this time than probably previously,” explained Osweiler. “But at the same token, like I told you guys, I always want what’s best for the team.”
Osweiler has taken his role as a back up seriously and has been doing everything he can to prepare his own game and the teams.
Osweiler gave some insight on his time as the backup. “My role for a couple weeks was running the scout team so I gave my best effort every single day to give our defense a tremendous look, and then come gamed, I did everything I could to help out Tom (Savage) and be there when he had questions.”
Despite a clunky start to Osweiler’s Texans career, he is making sure that he follows the O’Brien mantra, "team first."
“I’ve been a team guy from the first time I started playing organized sports. That’s what makes football and other sports so special, is the team,” said Osweiler. “So, the team was able to go out there and win games when I wasn’t playing, and that’s what it’s all about. It doesn’t matter who’s out there. It’s about supporting your teammates, being there for your teammates and helping this team win football games.”
