Houston Texans Update: Bill O'Brien Explains Why He Made the Moves with Romeo Crennel and Mike Vrabel

Bill O'Brien discussed the new set up with his coaching staff with Romeo Crennel and Mike Vrabel.

The Houston Texans are at the Senior Bowl, taking in a good portion of the draft prospects in Mobile, Alabama, and head coach Bill O’Brien is in attendance with the Houston contingent. O’Brien had time to stop and talk to SiriusXM NFL Radio’s “Moving the Chains." After taking a couple weeks off after the season, the group is back to handling the draft preparation.

O’Brien dove into the reasons for keeping Romeo Crennel around the organization after his contract as defensive coordinator expired and the team will keep him as the assistant head coach with a two-year contract.

“I think it was really important for us to be able to keep Romeo (Crennel) and to keep his knowledge, longevity, his work ethic, his team philosophy, within our organization was a big deal for us,” O’Brien explained at the Senior Bowl.

“He means a lot to our organization, to me personally, he has done an excellent job here for three years.” O’Brien said of Crennel. “He is somebody that I felt if we made the assistant head coach, he could really help me. I need as much help as I can get, and still have a hand in the defense. We are going to let Mike Vrabel run the defense be the defensive coordinator.”

Vrabel will now take over the defense in 2017 as reported at the end of the season but the issue was finally addressed by O’Brien stamping his approval on the moves. The Texans are still in the market for a wide receiver coach and possible linebacker coach with Vrabel moving to defensive coordinator, which will take his full focus.

The Texans will now finish up at the Senior Bowl and head back to NRG Stadium to start breaking down their current team to address putting together an improved roster over the next three to four months before OTAs arrive.

“We are going to sit down and evaluate every player on our team. We are going to evaluate players, we are going to evaluate scheme and we are really dive into what we need to do to get better,” O’Brien said of the Texans roster evaluation. “That is just the way it is, that is what we do every year. Whether it is quarterback, cornerback, safety, defensive line, or offensive line every position is getting evaluated.”
