The most prized free agent for the Houston Texans in recent seasons, A.J. Bouye, was making the rounds at Super Bowl weekend and offered up some thoughts on his pending free agent status. Bouye is one of the top free agents set to hit the market and one of the top cornerbacks in the NFL set to get paid. The Texans have a decision to make on Bouye and have made it clear that they want him back for the coming seasons. Labeled as one of “our guys” by coach Bill O’Brien, Bouye shares the same sentiment on wanting to return to the team that gave him a chance out of UCF.
“You always want to stay where you have been; just the chemistry I have with these guys, the friendships we developed,” Bouye said on Radio Row on Tuesday. “You know It is a business, I understand that whole aspect. I have a daughter I have to take care of, a family.”
Bouye has made it clear that his daughter, who lives in Houston, is a big part of the decision making process for him. With free agency not opening up until March 9th, the Texans can begin negotiations on March 7th to try to keep him from hitting the market. Bouye is putting his trust into his agent to help him make the right decision for him and his family.
“I am just waiting it out right now I am not even focused on it, I am letting my agent take care of everything,” Bouye stated. “He is going to come to me and tell me what he thinks is a good situation.”
There is some excitement for Bouye to know what is waiting for him in his third contract, for which he has been waiting for since arriving to the Texans in 2013. Bouye has played three seasons on a rookie free agent deal and the 2016 season on a restricted deal, finally hitting his unrestricted year in 2017. The Texans tried to extend Bouye prior to the 2016 season but the emerging cornerback bet on himself and won with his best season as a professional.
“I am a little bit excited you know,” Bouye said of free agency. “I don’t know exactly where I am going to be at or anything. I don’t what teams are interested right now. I am just waiting it out and enjoying my time with my daughter.”
