Former Houston Texans Linebacker DeMeco Ryans Lands a Coaching Position with the San Francisco 49ers

Former Houston Texans linebacker DeMeco Ryans is entering the coaching ranks with the San Francisco 49ers.

A familiar face from Houston Texans history is getting his first opportunity to coach in the NFL. Former Texans linebacker DeMeco Ryans will take a role with the San Francisco 49ers as a defensive quality control coach. Ryans will join the newly named 49ers head coach, Kyle Shanahan, who was formerly an offensive coordinator for both the Texans and Atlanta Falcons. Shanahan spent four seasons with the Texans, overlapping with Ryans who arrived to the Texans at the same time, in 2006.

Ryans was selected by the Texans out of Alabama in the 2006 NFL Draft in the 2nd round (33rd overall selection). He was subsequently named AP NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year. Ryans solidified himself as one of the top linebackers in franchise history, notching an All-Pro Selection and two Pro-Bowl selections in his 6 seasons with the franchise. For his Texans career, Ryans totaled 479 tackles with 13.5 sacks, despite missing a portion of the 2010 season with a torn achillies. Ryans was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles prior to the 2012 season for an extra draft pick but his leadership was lost after the trade.

Ryans will take his high football I.Q., for which he received accolades during his playing days, to the coaching ranks. Ryans will join former Texans offensive line coach John Benton with the 49ers, continuing a trend of familiar faces from Houston in the coaching ranks across the NFL.
