Bill O'Brien Doesn't Put It on DeAndre Hopkins for His Struggles in 2016

Bill O'Brien is looking forward to having DeAndre Hopkins despite a down 2016 season.

Bill O’Brien met with media at the NFL Combine and discussed various topics but one topic brought a lot of attention. When asked about the season DeAndre Hopkins had in 2016, O’Brien was clear on what he thought of his star wide receiver’s season.

Hopkins saw dip in production with new quarterback Brock Osweiler and it was clear that the players were not always on the same page during games.

“So he dropped off in catches and he dropped off in yards, but he did make some big plays for us during the season,” O’Brien explained to media at the NFL Combine.

O’Brien notes that the Texans did win the AFC South and went 9-7. In his comments, he emphasized the importance of Hopkins during the stretch.

“He (Hopkins) made some important plays in those games; 3rd down plays, red area plays,” O’Brien continued.

Hopkins saw his catch total drop from 2015 to 2016 by 33 receptions and almost 600 receiving yards. He still finished the 2016 season with 78 receptions for 954 yards and 4 touchdowns, which continued to prove he is the focal point of the passing game. It was the first time in Hopkins' career that he did not total 100 passing targets due to the ball being spread around more, especially to the Texans tight end group, which ranked second in the NFL in targets and receptions.

The drop off Hopkins experienced does not have O’Brien concerned about one of his top offensive weapons going into 2017.

“As far as production and things like that, yeah the production dropped off a little bit but it wasn’t anything he did,” O’Brien said of Hopkins. “I think he is a great player, I love coaching the guy. I am looking forward to coaching him this year.”
