Bill O'Brien Feels J.J. Watt Will Be on the Field During OTAs for the Houston Texans

Bill O'Brien gives an early update on J.J. Watt and his status heading into the off-season.

Prior to Super Bowl LI (READ HERE), Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt said he was no longer in the rehab stage of his recovery from the back issue that landed him on the injured reserve in 2016. Watt was now entering off-season mode, getting ready for the season, and coach Bill O’Brien gave a little insight into how the three-time defensive player of the year award winner is feeling.

“J.J.’s doing well. I’m not a doctor,” O’Brien remarked regarding Watt. “I’m not going to stand up here and give you exactly everything that’s going on with him medically because, to be honest with you, I don’t really know.”

O’Brien mentioned that he is not allowed to discuss football with Watt and the times he has run into him or talked to team trainers, the health reports come back as positives.

“I don’t want to like get in trouble with the CBA, but I can tell you that he is doing very well. He’s in great shape. He can’t wait to be back,” O’Brien added.

Watt was not sure what his workload would be during OTAs and even thought that he could be held out when the time arrived to put in that preparation work on the field. O’Brien sounded more optimistic on what Watt could do for the upcoming off-season.

“He’ll probably participate, to a certain extent, in OTAs,” O’Brien said of Watt. "But OTAs for the linemen is a little bit different than OTAs for the receivers and the DBs.”

O’Brien is looking more towards training camp to see where Watt truly is health wise. “The true test for him will be training camp, and I know that he’s really looking forward to training camp and coming back and playing as good as ever in 2017.”
