Report: A.J. Bouye Set to Leave the Houston Texans for the Jacksonville Jaguars

A.J. Bouye set to leave the Houston Texans for the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The biggest domino of the Houston Texans off-season is set to fall with cornerback A.J. Bouye reportedly leaving for the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Texans now have roster spots to address with the exit of Bouye who is also joining starting safety Quintin Demps on a new team for 2017.  Bouye was being pursued by Jacksonville, Tampa Bay, Chicago, Tennessee and Philadelphia at the opening of legal tampering across the NFL.

The Texans attempted to re-sign Bouye prior to the 2016 season but was turned down to play the 2016 season on a restricted deal worth $1.671 million.

It was clear the Texans were heading into a bidding war with other teams after the they opted not to franchise tag Bouye for $14.2 million. The Texans chose not to chance being on the hook for a cap hit north of $14 million and tried to win him over in free agent process. The Texans countered their offer to Bouye more than once pushing to $12 million per year but finally bowed out after the price tag exceeded that number. Early thoughts are the numbers for Bouye are set to exceed the the $13 million a year mark and maybe even close to the $15 million a year.

Bouye showed that he was one of the top defenders for the Texans in 2016, appearing in 15 games with 63 total tackles, 1 sacks, 16 pass deflections,  and one interception. In the playoffs, Bouye had 7 total tackles and 6 pass deflections with 2 interceptions, plus a forced fumble.
