It has been a slow start to the free agency period for the Houston Texans as the team lays low, surveying the free agent pool before pulling the trigger on any signings. The Texans have been keeping a close eye on the offensive tackle pool, inquiring on Ricky Wagner, who eventually signed with Detroit, and had a a visit lined up with Mike Remmers who was signed by Minnesota before he could arrive to Houston this past weekend.
To make the onlookers more nervous, the Texans have watched A.J. Bouye (Jacksonville), Quintin Demps (Chicago), John Simon (Indianapolis), and Don Jones (San Francisco) all exit as unrestricted free agents, signing with their respective new teams.
Despite losing his former players, head coach Bill O’Brien remains happy for them getting their new contracts and being rewarded for the work they put in.
“I am always happy for the players. The way the system works, it allows players that play well, are good teammates, do the right thing on and off the field,” O’Brien said Sunday night at a Special Olympics event. “It allows them to be rewarded, whether it is our team or another team. I am always in favor of the player being rewarded.”
The Texans did bring back one of their top tight end options from 2016 in Ryan Griffin and O’Brien was happy that they could bring back what he called a “key part” of the offense.
“(Ryan) Griff(in) is a key part of what we are trying to do offensively. He was very productive for us this year, more productive than he had been in his previous two years with us,” O’Brien explained. “Hard working guy, great teammate. Texted him last night; very happy for him and he is looking forward to being back.”
The Texans want to remain vigilant with the current free agents on the market while continuing to go to pro days to evaluate prospects for the NFL Draft. It has been a slow process, from the outside, but the Texans are in no rush to spend money unless they need to for the upcoming season.
