Houston Texans Rookie Mini-Camp Update: Bill O'Brien and Deshaun Watson Working Close Since His Arrival

Bill O'Brien is working close with Deshaun Watson since his arrival to Houston for rookie mini-camp.

Texans head coach Bill O’Brien is working side-by-side with quarterback Deshaun Watson at the start of rookie mini-camp. The Texans have the task of getting Watson ready, but not too quick so as to stunt his growth as a quarterback by overwhelming him too much information in such a small amount of time.

O’Brien knows that coaching up Watson will take time and patience and the staff is teaching him from the ground up. Watson feels like he has done everything he could to prepare for Texans rookie mini-camp this weekend.

“I think I came in prepared and in shape, but it’s a whole new system, it’s a whole new learning curve,” Watson explained. “There’s a lot that I have to continue to work on and improve on.”

O’Brien likes what he has seen with the Texans first-round selection.

“He’s a hardworking guy. He pays attention in the meetings,” O’Brien commented on Watson. “Competitive guy. We’ve had a lot of fun working with him.”

Watson likes the fact that O’Brien has been with him since he stepped into the building.

“I think it’s cool just to be able to have your head coach and the main guy that knows this system very well to be hands-on in the meeting rooms with you and on the field with you,” Watson said with a smile. “Because you can learn it firsthand, see what he sees, and for you to be that same coach on the field whenever you are practicing, scrimmage, or in the game.”

O’Brien knows that it will take time to instruct Watson how to make run adjustments, how to make calls in play, identify defenses, and other things that go with the being a quarterback. It is also comes down to the little things, such as teaching Watson how to call a huddle.

“We start him with what we call the basic information section of the playbook,” O’Brien explained. “How do we huddle? Where do you go in the huddle? If the Houston Texans are on this sideline, you’re on this side of the huddle. If you’re on this sideline, you’re on this side of the huddle. I mean, it’s that simple.”

O’Brien acknowledges the work that needs to be done with Watson, teaching the new “language” of the Texans offense to him. Teaching him the Texans offense which is a clear increase in expectations from Watson’s days in college.

“Our verbiage is a lot different than what he had at Clemson, and that’s the same for every rookie that is here relative to their college,” O’Brien said of the Texans offense. “It’s like learning a new language.”

O’Brien knows that it will take time teaching Watson run adjustments, how to call in play, identifying defenses and other things that go with the being a quarterback. It is also comes down to the little things with training Watson, how to call a huddle, for example.

Despite all of the work needed to be done, O’Brien is confident the rookies and Watson will be able to get the Texans offense down in due time.

“It’s just so much information that we throw at these guys, especially the quarterback position,” O’Brien said of Watson. “But, as long as you keep plowing ahead and you take it one step at a time and you stick with it, you’ll learn it. But you have to repeat it, you have to stick with it, you have to study, and like I said, that’s any position.”
