Treston Decoud is not hard to miss when he takes the field for the Houston Texans during rookie mini-camp. Decoud checks in at 6'2" and 206 lbs., making him one of the taller cornerbacks the Texans have drafted in franchise history.
The team is looking for another cornerback to put into the rotation, to aid with the departure of A.J. Bouye, and to join the current group highlighted by veterans Johnathan Jospeh, Kareem Jackson, and Kevin Johnson. Decoud instantly is the biggest cornerback of the group which continues the emphasis on increasing size and speed on defense.
Decoud knows that his frame at cornerback gives him an advantage and tries to use it to his benefit on the field.
“Just using my length,” Decoud explained about his size to get the upper hand on the football field. “But it always starts with footwork so I’m just trying to work on my footwork and do what I can to help the team win.”
The Texans will be without Decoud until mid-June due to Oregon State’s quarterly educational system so the team will have to find creative ways to keep him involved until he finishes up school. Decoud knows he has to stay on top of the Texans playbook while he is away from the team.
“You just have to stay in the playbook and you’ll be all right,” Decoud explained of the playbook, “So that’s what I’m trying to do, just stay in the playbook and learn terminology from the coaches and just learn from other players.”
Decoud knows he will be behind and is focused on using coaches and his new teammates to help him understand the defense. He will be able to communicate with the team while at school, much like Xavier Su’a-Filo did his rookie season after being drafted out of UCLA, who also use the quarter system.
He is not taking his experience with the Texans for granted and knows he has to still make the team when the 53-man roster is set. Decoud knows he could be somewhere else in life.
“I could definitely be cutting grass or something else so I appreciate being her,” Decoud stated. “I’m glad to be a Texan. I’m just working to make the team and work hard.”
