Penalties, Turnovers Cloud Titans 31-24 Loss

The weather was better tonight in the Superdome, but the Titans still had trouble hanging on to the football.

The Tennessee Titans were in a giving mood tonight in the Mercedes Benz Superdome, and it cost them in a 31-24 loss to the New Orleans Saints.

Five turnovers, (four fumbles, one interception)combined with 10 penalties for 111 yards proved hard to overcome, though New Orleans committed twenty-two penalties for 184 yards helped to even the field.

After last weeks rainy opener, the Titans were hoping to get a better look at their first team offense, and they got that chance tonight.

Quarterback Jake Locker finished the night 8 of 11 for 75 yards and a touchdown, while Shonn Greene ran for 46 yards on 9 carries before being shaken up following a run that ended in a Greene fumble.

Justin Hunter, who earlier in the week at practice had his nameplate on his jersey changed to JAG (Just Another Guy) proved to be anything but tonight. Hunter needed just four receptions to tally 111 yards and two touchdowns. His first coming on a 4 yard score, the second on a 64 yard crossing route from Zach Mettenberger.

Mettenberger who replaced the injured Charlie Whitehurts (right hand) had a great night throwing the football, as the rookie completed 20 of 25 attempts for 269 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. For the second consecutive game, Mettenberger had a lost fumble but otherwise was impressive in his return to Louisiana, where he played collegiality at LSU.

Rookie running back Bishop Sankey added six carries for 31 yards and tight end Taylor Thompson added five receptions for 56 yards.

The Titans offensively out gained the Saints 412-399 and showed some of the fingerprints of Ken Whisenhunt with multiple formations, motions and other things that bring hope that this offense will be better than most people believe they could be entering the season.
