All has been quiet on the Titans front and the team enjoys their final break before training camp starts. That is until now.
Zach Mettenberger, who was displaced as the teams starter with the selection of Marcus Mariota has apparently seen fit to rekindle his war of words with Houston Texans star defender J.J. Watt. Some nine months after Watt called out the then rookie quarterback for his pregame ”selfie” that was posted to social media only minutes before the two teams met at L.P. Field, Mettenberger has now fired back.
In an interview with Campussports.net Mettenberger took his turn to slam Watt, by calling his Texans letterman’s jacket high schoolish .
"J.J. had to say it's a bit high schoolish that I take selfies, and I think he still rags me on Instagram every time he posts a selfie," Mettenberger said. "At the same time, if that's high schoolish, he got a letterman jacket made -- a Texans letterman jacket.”
"That's pretty high schoolish to me, don't you say?"
During the game last season in Nashville, Watt sacked Mettenberger and then took an imaginary “selfie” of himself kneeling next to Mettenberger on the ground. Following the game Watt commented on the rookie’s pregame photo by saying "this is the National Football League, not high school."
Mettenberger deleted his Twitter account the week following the Titans loss to the Texans and has been mostly quite since that time, with his only controversial comment coming when asked about competing with Mariota for the starting job. Mettenberger said that the competition would be “a fight to the death,” prompting comments about the statement.
Mariota is set to be the starter for the Titans this season, and barring injury Mettenberger will not face Watt on the field when the two teams meet twice this season but somehow I bet that Watt will not let Mettenberger’s latest comment go without response.
Just how long it will take for Watt to respond is the question, and how personally might he take the comment about his jacket are the questions.
This could get interesting.
