Mariota is on pace to be tops all time in completion percentage for rookies

Marcus Mariota is on pace for yet another NFL rookie record, but can he get there?

In eight games this season, quarterback Marcus Mariota has posted one of the highest completion percentages in NFL history among rookie quarterbacks. He has completed 169 of 259 passes for 2,026 yards, 13 touchdowns and six interceptions.

Pittsburgh’s Ben Roethlisberger established the highest rookie completion percentage of all-time in 2004, completing 66.4 percent (196) of his 295 attempts. Robert Griffin’s 65.7 percent completion rate in 2012 (258 of 393) ranks second on the rookie list. With six games remaining in 2015, Mariota ranks third at 65.3 percent.

Mariota has only once this season dipped below 60 percent in completions, a 56.8 percent showing at Cleveland on Sept. 20.

Mariota’s current completion percentage would shatter the franchise’s rookie record. Vince Young’s completion percentage of 51.5 in 2006 is the best among rookie qualifiers in team annals.
