Shiancoe, Sullivan sidelined to start the week

The two Vikings injured in the team's last game, against the Detroit Lions Sept. 26, were not taking part in practice on Monday, even with the Vikings coming off their bye.

Sullivan injured his calf on the very first offensive play for the Vikings and didn't return to action. Shiancoe injured his hamstring later in that game.

Sullivan watched practice on Monday and Shiancoe worked out on the sidelines. The tight end ran up a hill adjacent to the practice field with trainer Eric Sugarman watching and slowly walked down backwards.

With a Monday night game next week, the Vikings have a longer time to recover and get players back in action, but it's uncertain if either of them will be able to go this far away from the game.

Without playing, Vikings defense improves ranking

The Vikings didn't register a hit on the football field over the weekend, but their defense still improved in the rankings.

The Vikings entered the weekend ranked fifth on defense, eighth against the run and pass. But, thanks to other games played over the weekend, their defense moved up a notch in the yardage-based rankings (using the average per game). The Vikings are now ranked fourth on defense, ninth against the run and seventh against the pass.

With a Monday night game still to go, the Vikings are ranked 15th on offense, fifth running the ball and 24th passing it.

In the NFC North, Green Bay is ranked 18th on offense (22nd running, 14th passing) and ninth on defense (23rd and sixth). Chicago is 25th on offense (31st and 16th) and 17th on defense (sixth and 27th). And Detroit is 14th on offense (25th and seventh) and 26th on defense (25th and 26th).
