Browns acquire DL Mitchell: Hot News for DE Jayme Mitchell

Vikings trade DE Jayme Mitchell

The Vikings have traded DE Jayme Mitchell to the Cleveland Browns for a late-round 2012 draft pick, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Mitchell played sparingly in the Vikings' first two games and was inactive for the third game against the Detroit Lions. He was stuck behind a talented and deep defensive line and wasn't getting much playing time.

Mitchell originally signed with the Vikings as an undrafted free agent in 2006 and in 2007 became the only undrafted rookie in team history to post two or more sacks in a game. He missed all of the 2008 season with a knee injury and had three tackles and five QB hurries in his comeback season.

Mitchell registered the Vikings' first sack of the season, his only one so far this year.

Jets getting Holmes back

While the Vikings wait to get their 1,300-yard receiver, Sidney Rice, back in action after Aug. 23 hip surgery, the New York Jets are looking forward to getting their new 1,200-yard receiver on the field for the first time Monday night.

Santonio Holmes was suspended the first four games of the season for violating the league's substance-abuse policy, but the Jets are activating him this week.

"When we get Santonio, he's been all through training camp with us, he was here in meetings, so we shouldn't miss a beat with him," Jets coach Rex Ryan said Monday. "To add a terrific player like Santonio to what we already have, like you said, our offense has really been rolling, it's good. Mark (Sanchez) (can) just throw it to the open guy. Whoever is open, throw it to him."

"… You go into the game, you just play what's called and you throw it to the open guy. It should be a lot of fun to watch."

Holmes had between 800 and 950 yards each of his first three seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers, and last year he produced 1,248 yards on 79 catches in his final season with the Steelers. Monday night will be his first action with the Jets.

"He can't wait to play, that much I know for a fact," Ryan said. "Everybody knows that about Santonio. He is a great competitor and competitors want to play. He's going to do whatever it takes to get on that field and contribute to this football team."

With Braylon Edwards and Jerricho Cotchery both in the lineup as well for New York, the Vikings should feel fortunate that they have Cedric Griffin and Chris Cook back in the cornerback ranks to deal with the Jets' receiving corps.
