Simulated Vikings with Moss, no Moss

The folks at have spoken. Or, at least their computers have simulated the benefits of the Randy Moss trade.

What If Sports simulated 501 games for the Patriots and Vikings with and without Randy Moss on the respective rosters.

For the Vikings, they went from a winning percentage of .590 without Moss to .630 with Moss. That means without Moss, the Vikings were projected to win eight games (7.67 to be exact) of their last 13 games, which would put them at 9-7 for the season. With Moss, they are projected to win eight games (8.19) as well.

In the simulations, the Vikings' scoring average increased from 22.9 points per game to 25 points per game in the final 13 games.

Over the next four-game stretch, Moss made a difference in one game. Without him, the simulator had the Vikings losing all four games – winning the simulations 34 percent of the time against the Jets, 42 percent against the Cowboys, 35 percent against the Packers and 38 percent against the Patriots. With Moss, the Vikings got above 50 percent – to 52 percent – against the Cowboys. He increased their chances to 46 percent against the Jets, 42 percent against the Packers and 48 percent against the Patriots.

Individually, the simulator had Moss picking up 895 yards and six touchdowns for the Vikings the rest of the season, which would project to 1,102 yards and seven touchdowns over the course of 16 games.

Carter: Moss was liked by teammates

Fans get one view of Randy Moss. The media gets another. But former Vikings teammate Cris Carter said Moss was well-liked in the locker room.

"Prime-time game, Randy goes big in the prime-time games. Randy plays big against Green Bay. Randy plays big against Chicago. Man, we enjoyed Randy. The teammates, the locker room, we enjoyed it," Carter said Wednesday. "It helped my career. That's the funnest (four years) I ever had. Randy brings that – I don't care what kind of interview he does tomorrow or tonight. When he gets in the locker room he's different and the guys like him."

The Vikings traded a third-round pick to acquire Moss on Wednesday, but Carter knows all about Moss after playing with him for four years in Minnesota.

Carter joined the Vikings as a $100 waiver-wire claim in 1990 and turned his career and life around in Minnesota. He is one of the leading candidates to get into the Pro Football Hall of Fame once again, being eligible for the last two votes.

He knows how Moss is perceived by the media and some fans, but he also knows that Moss' arrival in the first round of 1998 put the franchise on the map around the NFL.

"Randy gave us kind of a sizzle, a little pop. It gave us a bigger visibility as far as the league was concerned and the fans of Minnesota, they didn't have any bad experiences with Randy," Carter said. "I mean, man, Randy scores touchdowns and fans love that."

Report: Third-rounder for Moss

All indications are that a deal between the Vikings and Patriots will be getting done sometime Wednesday. If that happens, the Vikings will send a third-round pick to the Patriots for WR Randy Moss, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

In fact, Schefter is so confident it's going down that he tweeted "when" it happens, not "if."

"When the Randy Moss-to-Minnesota trade is completed later, Patriots will receive a third-round pick in return from Vikings," Schefter wrote.

No press conference has been announced yet, but doing a deal quickly makes sense. The Vikings would want to quickly immerse Moss into their game plan for Monday night's game against the New York Jets, and the biggest installation of that game plan takes place Thursday with a full schedule on Friday and shorter practice on Saturday.

From the Patriots' perspective, if Moss is going to help the Vikings before the Oct. 19 trading deadline, he might as well start helping against an AFC East opponent, the New York Jets, who are a bitter rival with the Patriots.
