VU Daily Blog: 11/5/10

Much of Friday's quick hitters centered on the receivers. Percy Harvin returned to practice on a limited basis and Sidney Rice speculation heated up. Oh, and by the way, Zygi Wilf reportedly considered firing Brad Childress early last week. See all the Vikings news and speculation as it progresses through the VU Daily Blog.

Report: Wilf considered firing Childress

Vikings owner Zygi Wilf considered firing head coach Brad Childress after he decided to release receiver Randy Moss without going through the proper protocol, according to what a team source told ESPN's Ed Werder.

According to the report, Wilf was "furious."

Childress was asked about the sense of support that he currently has from Wilf.

"My sense doesn't make any difference. You speak to him on that," Childress said. "We've always communicated very well and I haven't seen any change on that."

Wilf was in town this week and talked to several veterans, but Childress declined to go into details and continued to advance the story that Wilf might be in town because of the elections in Minnesota (the Vikings are looking for public financing for a stadium).

"I just know that he came in and was able to chat with a few of our players. Good conversations," Childress said.

The events of the last week – with Moss publicly criticizing Childress and the coach following that up with Moss' release – will make for an interesting scenario at the Metrodome. Fans have been calling for Childress' job, and another lackluster effort on the field and an anti-Childress crowd will leave Wilf with a difficult decision.

‘Tough guy' Harvin officially listed as questionable

Despite limping badly at the start of Friday's practice, WR Percy Harvin is officially listed as questionable with an ankle injury he suffered in the Patriots game.

"You know, he's a tough guy. Let's face it," Vikings coach Brad Childress said. "He injured that foot on his first catch of the game and still was very productive. I would just say that he's tough. Different things respond different ways. Everything goes through your foot and your ankle so he's got to have his faculties for the game the way he plays it."

In addition to Harvin, the Vikings listed CB Frank Walker as questionable with a hamstring injury.

OL Chris DeGeare (ankle), Asher Allen (back), Chris Cook (quadriceps), Brett Favre (ankle/foot/chin), Ben Leber (knee), Lito Sheppard (hand), John Sullivan (calf), Pat Williams (elbow) and Bernard Berrian (groin) are all listed as probable, meaning they are a virtual certainty to be available. Berrian was added to the injury report with a groin injury and was limited in practice Friday.

The Cardinals listed LB Clark Haggans (groin) as doubtful while RB Beanie Wells is questionable with a knee injury.

DT Alan Branch, WR Steve Breaston, LB Will Davis, WR Early Doucet and DE Kenny Iwebema are all probable.

Rice still dealing with soreness

Sidney Rice said before Thursday's practice that he was pretty sore from Wednesday, his first practice with the Vikings since this summer.

On Friday morning, he posted a blog that the soreness continued after Thursday's practice.

"I woke up on Thursday with just a little soreness, but after Thursday's practice I felt really sore," he wrote on sidneyrice18.com. "I sat in the cold tub for like 30 minutes. That usually takes some of the soreness out. Hopefully I'll be ready for Friday and some more practice. If nothing else, I just want to get out there and run again and see how it feels."

Rice had hip surgery on Aug. 23 and told reporters Thursday that he "probably" wouldn't be playing Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals. However, the Vikings are still short on receivers after the release of Randy Moss and with Percy Harvin still limping on an injured left ankle.

"I think Brett [Favre] is happy to have me around," Rice wrote. "While I was hurt he asked me every week through the whole ordeal how I was feeling. I think he's happy to see me out there running around."

Rice was practicing on Friday again.

Harvin returns, still limping

WR Percy Harvin returned to Vikings practice Friday, at least for individual drills, but he was still limping around on his injured left ankle and was far from full speed.

Harvin was injured on his first catch Sunday against the New England Patriots when he appeared to have a cleat catch in the turf. He returned to the game shortly after that and ended up catching six passes for 104 yards. He didn't practice Wednesday or Thursday.

We should find out more about the extent of his practice after it's over, when Brad Childress addresses the media and the injury report is issued.

Sidney Rice was back on the field for his third straight practice this week after having hip surgery Aug. 23. Both he and Childress said he "probably" wouldn't play Sunday, but the Vikings still have a roster spot open after releasing Randy Moss on Monday.
