Pat Williams, Jared Allen, Childress respond to story

Vikings defensive tackle Pat Williams and defensive end Jared Allen responded to a story in the Chicago Sun-Times and St. Paul Pioneer Press that quoted unnamed Vikings players blasting head coach Brad Childress.

The story, written by former Pioneer Press beat writer Sean Jensen, drew quite the reaction in the locker room from a couple of veterans that weren't available to the media until Thursday.

"I don't know. That's just all reports. Ain't no names. That's Sean Jensen. So that's what Sean Jensen do. He ain't going to give nobody no names," Williams said. "So I really don't pay no attention to that. That's all he-say, he-say stuff."

"We know that Childress doesn't have our backs, so why should we have his?" an unnamed player told Jensen. "We're playing for us, and we're winning despite him."

Another team source said Childress "has absolutely no people skills."

Williams said using unnamed sources casts doubt on its accuracy.

"He ain't going to put no names put out there, so I don't know if it' true or not," Williams said. "That's like somebody saying I'm gay, but they don't have to tell me who said it. I don't know. But they're going to believe it. They're going to believe it. If somebody starts that rumor, they're going to believe it. So that's how it is. That's all rumors. They're not going to tell me who said it, so I don't know."

Childress certainly appreciated Williams' words.

"The first time I met Pat … Pat said to me, ‘I've got your back, coach,'" Childress said. "I didn't know who it was, so I loved being worked on by a professional. Who the hell is that guy? He's one of our strong guys in the locker room, from experience, from the position he plays. He's a good man."

Allen said stories like that shouldn't affect the Vikings' season.

"If you've got something to say, say it. If not, there are some things too that should be kept in-house. There's some things that (reporters) don't need to know about. Be honest. It's just hoopla is what it is. It should have no effect on that football game out there because of the fact that 22 guys are going to be on the field at one time and the best guys are going to win, so prepare yourself and all this other nonsense shouldn't have anything to do with it," Allen said. "At the end of the day, it doesn't matter if you work here, the coach is here, the game still has to be played. So I'm trying to make sure I don't get fired. That's what people's mentality should be. It should be: do my job, control what I can control, shut your mouth, let your pads do the talking and let's move forward and let's make this season a success."

Allen said the players need to focus on playing the game and not the distractions that have been surrounding them the entire season.

Favre returns, Harvin still out

The Vikings had Brett Favre at practice Thursday with a helmet on and throwing passes. But his favorite target this season was nowhere to be seen.

Favre was given last Wednesday off practice and followed that up with another Wednesday off this week. He was limited last Thursday and might be limited today as well while he deals with ankle, foot and calf injuries.

But leading receiver Percy Harvin wasn't at the start of practice on Thursday or in the locker room during the media's access period. On Wednesday, Vikings coach Brad Childress said Harvin was dealing with a migraine headache but didn't get into details on the severity of this episode.

An injury report is due out later this afternoon.

Also being held out of practice were cornerback Asher Allen (concussion) and safety Jarmarca Sanford (hamstring).
