Favre expected to practice Thursday

Vikings quarterback Brett Favre isn't expected to practice on Wednesday, but the coaching staff hopes to see him practice Thursday to gauge his progress toward playing Sunday, interim head coach Leslie Frazier told Sirius NFL Radio on Tuesday.

"He probably won't practice tomorrow, but we'll get a chance to see how he looks on Thursday and just try to make a determination based on that how things will look for Sunday," Frazier said on the Mad Dog Radio show. "But we're all hoping that he'll be healthy enough to play. He's still a great quarterback and if he's able to play it gives a great chance to win against New York."

Favre sprained his sternoclavicular joint near his throwing shoulder on his first pass Sunday and didn't return to the game.

Frazier reiterated what he's been saying since he took over as interim head coach – that Brett Favre gives the team the best chance to win.

"Brett, he's our starting quarterback and if he's healthy, he's going to be out there," Frazier said. "If there's any definition of an ironman, it would be Brett Favre. It's incredible what he's accomplished in his career."

If Favre is able to play, it would be his 298th consecutive regular-season start and his 300th consecutive game played.

Young to be placed on injured reserve, not gone

Running back Albert Young was not just waived, he was waived/injured and is expected to be placed on season-ending injured reserve. That means he could still be in the team's future plans, but those plans won't include the 2010 season.

It's unclear when Young was hurt or what he hurt. He rushed 10 times Sunday for 27 yards and ran for two yards on the Vikings' final offensive play of the game.

The Vikings signed running back Lorenzo Booker to replace Young and hope to use him on third downs. Booker will wear jersey number 27.

Vikings waive Albert Young, sign practice-squad QB

Interim head coach Leslie Frazier acknowledged yesterday that the Vikings would be signing running back Lorenzo Booker, a third-round draft choice of the Miami Dolphins in 2007.

Today, the Vikings announced that running back Albert Young was the roster casualty to make room for Booker. Young, the second-year player from Iowa, entered training camp with an opportunity to gain the third-down role but was never able to grab hold of it. Now Booker is expected to have the chance to fill the role vacated by Chester Taylor when he signed with the Chicago Bears in free agency.

The Vikings also released offensive lineman Adrian Martinez from the practice squad, signed last week, and signed QB R.J. Archer to fill his spot on the practice squad. Archer was with the Vikings during the offseason but was released prior to training camp.

Peterson up for fan award

Vikings running back Adrian Peterson is up for the FedEx Ground Player of the Week for his performance Sunday against the Buffalo Bills.

Peterson rushed 16 times for 107 yards and three touchdowns, including a 43-yard touchdown run, in the Vikings' 38-14 win over Buffalo. Making the 100-yard game even more impressive was that Peterson was nearly deactivated prior to the game because of a sprained ankle suffered the week before.

He is up against Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles, who rushed for 116 yards on 21 carries in a 10-6 win over the Denver Broncos, and Jaguars back Maurice Jones-Drew, who rushed for a career-high 186 yards on 31 carries in a 17-6 win over the Titans.

Fans can vote at NFL.com/FedEx through 11 a.m. Central Friday to determine the FedEx Air & Ground NFL Players of the Week.
