Defensive line's success shows in nominations

The Vikings didn't have one of their players earn NFC Defensive Player of the Week for last weekend's games, but the fact that two of their defensive linemen were nominated for the weekly award shows how well they performed.

Pro Bowl defensive end Jared Allen had five tackles, a sack and a forced fumble last week against the Buffalo Bills and was one of the nominees.

Fellow defensive end Brian Robison, filling in for the injured Ray Edwards (ankle) and making his first start of the season, was also one of the nominees. He had three tackles and two fumble recoveries. Robison said it was the first time he could remember having two fumble recoveries in one game, whether that's in high school, college or the pros.

Cowboys linebacker Sean Lee, who had four tackles and two interceptions in a 38-35 win over Indianapolis, ended up winning the award.

Favre doesn't practice; likely game-time decision

Vikings quarterback Brett Favre was expected to practice on Thursday, but he was held out again after going through the morning walkthrough and deciding against testing his sprained right shoulder in the afternoon practice.

"He tested some things this morning in the walkthrough and just didn't feel comfortable in going much farther this afternoon," interim head coach Leslie Frazier said. "We said, hey, we'll wait until tomorrow. Get another day's rest and take a look at it tomorrow hopefully."

Joining Favre sitting out of practice were G Steve Hutchinson (thumb), CB Chris Cook (knee), DE Ray Edwards (ankle), WR Percy Harvin (migraines) and S Tyrell Johnson (knee).

Hutchinson practiced in a limited fashion on Wednesday, but he sat out Thursday and is expected to test the fractured thumb again on Friday.

Several Vikings were limited: QB Joe Webb (hamstring), RB Toby Gerhart (hamstring), RB Adrian Peterson (ankle) and WR Sidney Rice (hip).

For the Giants, only tackle Shawn Andrews didn't practice, although S Brian Jackson (hand), WR Hakeem Nicks (leg), C Shaun O'Hara (foot), WR Steve Smith (pectoral) and DE Osi Umenyiora (knee) were limited.

Sounds like the Brett Favre decision will go until Sunday. He didn't throw at all again today, Frazier said. No Harvin either. #

Vikings shuffle the practice participants

Brett Favre wasn't throwing pass during the early portion of Thursday's practice open to the media, but he was expected to test out the arm at some point.

"I believe the plan is still to get him out here today, see what he can do this afternoon," offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell said before practice.

"He's made some progress. He has a little more range of motion. I see him stretching and moving around. I think he's obviously in some pain. Particularly sleeping I think is not very comfortable. … I have seen him progress a little bit."

Favre wasn't the only starter not practicing Thursday. Steve Hutchinson was also at practice, but didn't look like he would be participating after being limited on Wednesday with a broken thumb in a cast.

Receiver Percy Harvin stayed away from practice once again. Harvin hasn't practiced since being limited eight days ago, when the migraine headache first struck.

Rookie Joe Webb (hamstring) returned to practice with the quarterbacks after being held out on Wednesday.

On the defensive side of the ball, Ray Edwards returned to practice after being held out Wednesday. Cornerback Chris Cook (knee) and safety Tyrell Johnson (knee) were both held out again.

Vikings could catch a break with Nicks

The Vikings pass defense, which has appeared to be the beneficiary of improved pressure on the quarterback of late, could be catching a break this week. Physical Giants receiver Hakeem Nicks isn't expected to play, according to FOXSports.com's Adam Caplan.

Nicks has been inactive the last two weeks with a leg injury and was limited in Wednesday's practice, but receiver Steve Smith could be in the lineup (he was limited Wednesday with a pectoral muscle).

"I can tell you that Nicks won't play this week. Just starting to move around,"Caplan said in a chat on FOXSports.com. "Smith is looking good for this week. How much of a role will be determined after the coaches review the practice tape later this week.

Despite missing the last two weeks, Nicks has 62 catches for 800 yards and nine touchdowns already this season.

While Caplan's take was good news for the Vikings secondary, Vikings fans may not be so happy with his opinion on the NFL's top running backs. Asked about Kansas City's Jamaal Charles, Caplan said, "I've seen every snap he's taken the last two seasons. He's way better now than Chris Johnson. Hard to give the MVP to a player that shares the ball, though. He's the most explosive RB in the league right now."

Cue the motivating music for Adrian Peterson.
