Steve Young critical of Vikings

Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Steve Young criticized the Vikings' decision to fire Brad Childress in the middle of the season and said they are wasting their talent.

Young's comments, via FoxSportsNorth.com, came during ESPN's postgame show, following the Bears' 40-14 blowout of the Vikings.

"Firing Brad Childress just destabilized everything even more," Young said, according to FSN. "If Brad Childress was here tonight I'd feel so much better. I don't know if he's the answer or not, but for the long-term continuity of this organization, it just seems like more upheaval and I don't think any organization wants to be in that spot.

"But I think what's sad about it is that they are so many teams that wish that they had this much talent, and they don't. This team has that much talent, and it might be wasted, and I don't want to see that."

The season of stress has caused many to wonder what Young said Monday night – where does it end for the Vikings? From Favre's training camp indecision to the NFL's investigation of him to the trade for and subsequent release of Randy Moss to the firing of Childress to the collapse of the Metrodome, it never seemed to end for the Vikings this year.

"They've gutted their coach. They're probably going to have to vacate the quarterback spot. The team is capable of going to the Super Bowl, but I just worry ... where's the bottom for this team?" Young said. "We know where the top is – with the renewal for Childress and Brett was going to come back, it all looked like it was hunky-dory at the end of last year, but I just wonder ... this team is headed south and I just don't know where the bottom is."

Favre leaves game with head injury

Punter Chris Kluwe predicted there would be some concussions and Brett Favre didn't even make it one half before taking a sack that likely ended his night with a head injury. His return was announced in the press box as doubtful.

Kluwe predicted on Sunday that there could be some concussions with the FieldTurf surface that is quick to freeze without heating coils underneath. When Favre was tossed to the ground by Corey Wootton on a 12-yard sack early in the second quarter, he stayed down on the ground until trainers attended to him and walked slowly to the sidelines.

"All respect to the people that cleared the field and got it ready, you did an amazing job. That being said, it's unplayable," punter Kluwe posted on his Twitter page Sunday after going through a walkthrough practice. "The field is as hard as concrete an hour and a half after they took the tarp off, and anyone that hits their head is getting a concussion."

Favre missed his first start since 1992 last Monday night, snapping a streak of 297 consecutive regular-season starts. He started against the Chicago Bears after being upgraded from "out" on Saturday's final injury report to "questionable" on Monday.

Joe Webb entered the game on the next series and finished the first half. The Vikings trailed 17-7 at the half.

Tarkenton expects ‘rock hard' field

Former Vikings quarterback Fran Tarkenton, in town as part of the announcement of the "50 Greatest Vikings," expects the field to be "rock hard" for tonight's game at TCF Bank Stadium.

"There's no way that field isn't gonna be rock hard. It's gonna be windy. It's gonna be cold," Tarkenton said during an interview on Sirius XM's Mad Dog Radio with hosts Bruce Murray and Bill Pidto. "And these guys today, you know, they're worried about their health. They're corporations. I'll bet you a lot of those top players don't show up tonight. Because the Vikings are playing for nothing.

"The Bears, I don't imagine they want to play outside either, but they've got a wonderful chance of winning the division so they've got something to play for. It's a disaster. They should have moved the game to a domed stadium which could take care of the whole deal. They didn't and I think, you know, it's going to be fun to watch an outdoor game, I always like that and I wish we still had outdoor football in Minnesota, but this is kind of a makeshift thing that is going to be interesting to watch but the players don't want to do it."

Favre playing; Peterson out

Brett Favre is warming up before the game and expected to start for the Vikings after the team was allowed to change his status from "out" on the final injury report issued Saturday to "questionable" on Monday.

Favre worked with the first-team offense during warmups and appeared to have the range to throw the ball downfield about 35 yards and seems to have most of his zip on the ball.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, who is attending tonight's game after meeting with Minnesota governor-elect Mark Dayton, said the Vikings handled the situation professionally.

"We don't allow people to play games with the injury list. They have to be legitimate medical injuries," Goodell said before the game.

"These are medical decisions. The current status of an individual is based on the medical results. … From my understanding he wasn't able to throw much a couple days ago."

Joe Webb will become the Vikings' second quarterback and newly signed Patrick Ramsey is the third (emergency) quarterback.

The Vikings also deactivated running back Adrian Peterson, who missed practice time last week with knee and ankle injuries.

Joining Peterson and Ramsey on the inactive list are WR Greg Lewis, S Tyrell Johnson, S Jamarca Sanford, T Thomas Welch, DT Jimmy Kennedy and QB R.J. Archer.

The Bears are much healthier. The only player of consequence inactive for the Bears is LB Pisa Tinoisamoa. Joining him on the inactive list were QB Caleb Hanie, CB Joshua Moore, RB Kahlil Bell, G Herman Johnson, G/C Edwin Williams, TE Desmond Clark and DT Marcus Harrison.

Favre upgraded; Hutchinson goes to injured reserve

Quarterback Brett Favre has been upgraded from "out" to questionable on the injury report, the Vikings confirmed on Monday.

Favre wasn't able to practice last week because of a sprained sternoclavicular joint in his throwing shoulder and the Vikings listed him as "out" on the final injury report on Saturday. However, Favre will now work out a couple hours before the game "to see if he's physically able to play tonight," a Vikings spokesman said.

The Vikings also placed guard Steve Hutchinson on injured reserve with a fractured thumb and signed quarterback R.J. Archer to the active roster after having him on the practice squad last week.

The drama continues to unfold even late in the season.
