Bud Grant: Favre ‘ran out of gas'

Former Vikings coach Bud Grant called Brett Favre "the greatest quarterback in football." But not in 2010.

"If you look at all the winning teams, they've all got great quarterbacks. We had the greatest quarterback in football. He just ran out of gas, that's all," Grant said whileattending Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton's inauguration.

Asked who will be the Vikings' next quarterback, Grant said with a laugh, "They're working on that right now."

Grant said he was attending Dayton's inauguration because they are good friends and he called Dayton a good friend of the Vikings. The franchise is hoping Dayton will be a key figure in the team's push to get public financing for a new stadium.

"As governor, he can't do anything. The legislature has got to do the work for the stadium," Grant said. "But he said he'd sign something if they come up with something."

Practice-squad players signed to futures contracts

We mentioned this in passing in one of our stories yesterday, but it's probably worth expanding upon since Monday turned into Leslie Frazier day.

The Vikings also got most of the players on their practice squad signed to futures contracts on Monday as well. So going forward, the following players are with the team again for 2011:

* Freddie Brown, a 6-4, 204-pound WR out of Utah

* Simeon Castille, a 6-0, 190-pound CB out of Alabama

* Ryan D'Imperio, a 6-3, 240-pound FB out of Rutgers

* Tremaine Johnson, a 6-2, 285-pound DT out of LSU

* Seth Olson, a 6-5, 312-pound guard out of Iowa

* Cord Parks, a 5-11, 182-pound CB out of Northeastern

I talked with D'Imperio for a little bit and he is very excited about the transition he made in 2010 from a college linebacker to a Vikings fullback while spending the season on the practice squad. Of course, it remains to be seen if the Vikings keep their offensive scheme intact with Leslie Frazier in charge and an offseason to implement any changes he wants.

On another roster note, receiver Juaquin Iglesias (6-1, 202), signed off the Bears practice squad on Saturday but who was inactive Sunday against Detroit, was issued jersey number 84 and is part of the Vikings roster again in 2011.
