On Thursday, we detailed and compared the passing statistics of five of the top quarterback prospects in this year's NFL draft – Blaine Gabbert, Cam Newton, Jake Locker, Ryan Mallett and Colin Kaepernick – through the statistics compiled by longtime NFL analyst Dave-Te Thomas, the man whose reports go to the NFL and its teams to help in their predraft evaluations.
The passing comparisons yielded some surprising results that had Gabbert, often considered the top quarterback in the class, fifth out of the five. When it came to engineering drives, Gabbert was fourth and Locker fifth, with Newton and Kaepernick finishing tied for first.
Today, keeping in mind the appreciation head coach Leslie Frazier has for quarterbacks who can make plays out of the pocket, we look at the rushing statistics of those same five quarterbacks. In Thomas fashion, he doesn't just look at the total yards or averages, but he breaks it down to first-down carries, third-down rushes that converted first downs and times a quarterback was dropped for a loss on a running play, as well as sacks.
After all the rushing averages were tallied, quarterbacks were awarded points based on their rankings compared to each other. Kaepernick, the least talked-about of the group, finished first and had a solid lead over Newton.
Rushing the ball isn't the most important skill for an NFL quarterback, but the ability to avoid a rush and keep a play alive is something every coach values. Take a look for yourself at the charts below and draw your own conclusions (and feel free to comment on them below).
