OVERVIEW

Robert Quinn was ruled ineligible for the 2010 season after it was determined he received improper agent-related benefits. According to facts submitted by the university, Quinn accepted two black diamond watches, a pair of matching earrings and travel accommodations for a trip to Miami, altogether valued at $5,642. Furthermore, Quinn was not truthful during three separate interviews with university and NCAA enforcement staff members.

Quinn showed enough in two seasons to warrant top draft pick consideration. The defensive end is often compared to former Tar Heels great Julius Peppers for his ferocious pass rushing ability. Quinn is able to harass quarterbacks with his explosive first step and superior speed off the edge.

In just 25 games, Quinn accumulated 13.0 sacks for minus 105 yards and 25.5 stops for losses totaling 139 yards. He posted 11.0 sacks in 2009, ranking as the fourth-highest single-season total in school history, topped only by Lawrence Taylor (16.0; 1980), Julius Peppers
(15; 2000) and Greg Ellis (12.5; 1996).

Quinn's impact on the Tar Heels' defense is well documented. In 2008, he was a true freshman just getting his feet under him. That season, North Carolina ranked 11th in the ACC and 80th nationally in sacks, averaging just 1.69 per game. The Tar Heels also placed last in the conference and 80th in tackles-for-loss with just 5.23 per game.

The defensive end had a breakout season as a sophomore and the results reflected on the entire unit. In 2009, North Carolina ranked third in the ACC and 28th nationally with an average of 2.54 sacks per game. Even more impressive, the Tar Heels rose to first in the conference and sixth nationally in tackles-for-loss with 8.08 per game. Six games into the 2010 season without Quinn in the lineup, North Carolina ranks 10th in conference and 91st nationally in sacks (1.33 spg), as well as 11th in the ACC and 88th in the country in tackles-for-loss (5.00 tpg).

The fact that Quinn is even playing football is astounding. The defensive end prepped at Fort Dorchester High School in Landon, South Carolina. After a junior season in which he racked up 89 tackles and 11 sacks, Quinn was regarded as one of the nation's top recruits.

He was rated a four-star prospect by Rivals.com, who listed him as the 18th-best strongside defensive end in the country and the 10th-best overall recruit from the state of South Carolina. Scout.com also gave him a four-star rating, ranking him at the 19th-best defensive end in the country.

As he entered his senior season along the defensive front, Quinn seemed different from day one. He was having trouble with his balance, and the usually aggressive defensive end would let runners run right past him. He became forgetful, and head coach Steve LaPrad would often see Quinn turn around to ask a teammate a question about the defensive formation.

In September, Quinn collapsed as he walked down the hallway of the high school. LaPrad took him to the doctor, but tests came back normal. Something was wrong with the normally athletic Quinn, as he now seemed sluggish and clumsy. "I had two meetings with him in here, in this office," LaPrad said. "As a coach, I thought about everything, from him not wanting to get hurt and risking his college career. 'Robert, what's going on?' Of course, he didn't answer. We had no clue of what was wrong. Nothing ever added up."

Quinn played in 10 games and collected 54 tackles with five sacks, 10 tackles for loss and 21 quarterback hurries. On an early Sunday morning two days after Fort Dorchester's game against rival Summerville, Quinn passed out in the bathroom at his house and his parents rushed him to the emergency room. He was admitted to the Medical University of South Carolina, and a CT scan revealed a brain tumor.

The tumor had caused a blockage to the spinal cavity, causing a buildup of fluids that resulted in swelling of the brain. Doctors inserted a tube to relieve the buildup of fluids and took a biopsy of the growth. The tumor was revealed to be benign, but it his football career was initially believed to be over.

"I remember a nurse told me I wouldn't play sports again," Quinn said. "I broke down in tears. I had been playing sports since I was young. I didn't know how to handle it. After a while I said, ‘OK, whatever. I'll make the best of it.' A couple of days later, a doctor came back and told me he'd see how things go before I was released. He said I would be able to play football again. That was all I needed."

With a newfound appreciation for football, Quinn weighed his college options. He was offered scholarships from countless universities, including North Carolina, Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Maryland, Rutgers, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia Tech.

"It's where you feel most comfortable at, and North Carolina was the place for me," Quinn said. "It was real tough. I sat up all last night thinking. I thought I had made the right choice, but I woke up this morning and I realized where I wanted to go, and North Carolina was the place."

Coach Butch Davis, who was battling a cancer scare of his own, was able to relate to Quinn. Davis had non-Hodgkin's lymphoma diagnosed after a growth was discovered in his mouth during a routine dental visit. "We're sort of in the same relationship. He had the cancer and I had the tumor, so I guess we're along the same terms there," Quinn said. "He's a nice guy, and he's won championships when he was at Miami and with the Cowboys. Overall, he and his staff seem pretty nice, and that's where I'm going to carry my football career."

Quinn enrolled at North Carolina in 2007 and immediately began contributing to the defense. He took over the starting job at right defensive end during the second game of the season after Darrius Massenburg went down with a knee injury. In 12 games, Quinn registered 34 tackles (22 solos) with two sacks for minus 11 yards and 6.5 stops for losses of 19 yards. He added three quarterback pressures, two forced fumbles and a pass deflection.

After taking the field less than a year removed from his surgery, Quinn was named the ACC's Brian Piccolo Award winner as the league's most courageous player. His performance on the gridiron also garnered a third-place finish in the voting for ACC Defensive Rookie of the year honors.

As a sophomore in 2009, Quinn enjoyed one of the finest seasons in UNC history. He earned first-team All-ACC honors and finished second in the voting for ACC Defensive Player of Year. He started all 13 games at right defensive end and placed fourth among Tar Heels defenders with 52 tackles (35 solos).

Quinn ranked second in the conference and 16th nationally with 11.0 sacks for minus 94 yards, while his 19.0 tackles for loss were a league-high and ranked 15th nationally. He forced six fumbles, the fourth-highest total in the nation, and added 12 quarterback pressures and three pass deflections.

Quinn was named the ACC's Defensive Lineman of the Week for a stellar performance vs. Duke. In that contest, the defensive end collected seven tackles (six solos) with three sacks for minus 26 yards, four tackles for combined losses of 34 yards, a forced fumble, a pass deflection and an impressive six quarterback pressures. He was also a candidate for the Ted Hendricks Award, honoring the nation's top defensive end.

Entering the 2010 season, Quinn was named to preseason watch lists for the Bronko Nagurski Award (top defensive player), Ted Hendricks Award (top defensive end), Rotary Lombardi Award (top lineman) and the Lott Trophy (top I.M.P.A.C.T. player). He was a preseason All-America choice by Blue Ribbon and Sporting News, and an All-ACC pick by the league's media.

Quinn was held out of the first five games of the season due to an ongoing NCAA investigation. The Monday following the team's win over Clemson, the junior was ruled ineligible for the 2010 season for receiving agent-related benefits and misleading university and NCAA enforcement staff members.
