Shiancoe recruiting McNabb to Vikings?

Vikings tight end Visanthe Shiancoe continues to be a proponent of the team signing a veteran quarterback.

In an interview with ComcastNet's "Washington Post Live," Shiancoe said he had "a little alcohol talk" with McNabb recently and promoted the idea of the 12-year veteran joining the Vikings.

"I told him, hey, look, Minnesota might be a good fit for you," Shiancoe said.

In March, Shiancoe told NFL Network he believes the team should also find a veteran that can step in right away while a rookie learns.

"I would say we draft somebody that could be a backup and could learn," Shiancoe said last month. "Right now, we have to go with a veteran quarterback, I feel – somebody that can adjust on the run because we might not even be practicing until August together as a team collectively."

Over his 12-year career, McNabb has completed 58.9 percent of his passes for 36,250 yards, 230 touchdowns and 115 interceptions.

McNabb is still under contract with the Washington Redskins, but they are expected to try to trade him or release him when the labor situation is resolved.

Doleman to announce Vikings' second-round pick

Former defensive end, a 1985 first-round draft pick for the Vikings, will announce the team's second-round pick next Friday at Radio City Music Hall in New York. Doleman was part of the "50 Greatest Vikings" team named in December.

The NFL announced that 32 "legendary" NFL alumni, one representing each team, will announce live on Friday every selection of the second round. This will mark the first time in NFL draft history every selection in a round has been announced by former players.

The Lions' pick will be announced by Barry Sanders, the Bears' by Richard Dent and the Packers' by Jim Taylor.

The Carolina Panthers, Miami Dolphins and New York Jets do not have second-round picks, so their player representatives will announce their third-round picks.

Vikings among top-paying NFL teams in 2010

In an ESPN story on the top-paying sports, top-paying teams and top-paid players by country, it was hardly surprising to see the Washington Redskins top the NFL list. Their players earned an average of $2,913,048 last year.

But not far behind, with only the New Orleans Saints ($2,845,831) between them and the Redskins, were the Minnesota Vikings, whose players averaged $2,826,007 last year, according to the report. Of course, the inflated salary of Brett Favre, who earned $16 million base salary last year, helped increase the Vikings' per-player average.

The Bears were next among NFL teams, with their players averaging $2,718,637, according to the story. The Vikings were 75th overall; the Packers were 90th at $2,592,050 and the Lions were 97th.

Numerous NBA and MLB teams were on the list well before the Redskins, who were 70th overall. But the top two teams were from the soccer world – Barcelona and Real Madrid – with their average annual player salaries approaching $8 million last year.

More McNabb-to-Minnesota speculation

Donovan McNabb to the Minnesota Vikings is becoming a popular topic in the past couple of weeks and, according to the Washington Post, there is good reason for the "steam."

The Post reports that "two people with knowledge of the situation" say the Vikings are interested in McNabb. But, since the Redskins have already tipped their hand on their plans to either release or seek a trade for McNabb, it is in their best interest to make it look like he is in demand on the trade market to try to increase what the team could get in return for him.

"It's believed that whenever the lockout ends, the Redskins will have to cooperate with McNabb on a destination because it is expected that they will have to get him to rework the contract he signed last November," the Post reported. "If McNabb is still on Washington's roster the day after the first regular season game, the Redskins would have to decide whether to pick up the $10 million option on his contract. His base salary for 2011 would be $1.75 million, but if he is on the 53-man squad the entire season, McNabb could receive a total of $12.75 million."

While the Vikings are expected to pursue a quarterback in the draft, it could be in their best interest to have a proven veteran like McNabb to help bridge the gap and mentor the rookie while he and Joe Webb develop.

But, until a new labor agreement or ruling is in place, no NFL teams are allowed to trade or sign players, so the speculation will remain speculation for what will probably be at least a few more weeks, if not longer.

Vick beats out Peterson in Madden cover contest

Believers of the cover jinx can rest easy. Vikings running back Adrian Peterson will not be on the cover of Madden 12.

Peterson lost to Eagles quarterback Michael Vick in the semifinals of fan voting on ESPN.com. Vick got 59 percent of the vote; Peterson garnered 41 percent in their head-to-head matchup.

In the other semifinal, Packers QB Aaron Rodger lost big to Browns running back Peyton Hillis. Rodgers got only 39 percent of the vote, compared to 61 percent for Hillis.

Cosell on the quarterbacks, more

Greg Cosell has been a call-it-like-he-sees-it talent evaluator behind the scenes at NFL Films and one we've come to appreciate. If he doesn't know enough about a player to form a public opinion, he says so. And we've often found his straightforward analysis to be spot-on.

With that said (or written), Peter King of Sport Illustrated has a similarly high opinion of Cosell and asked him to evaluate 10 NFL prospects. Here is Cosell's take on a few of the quarterbacks not likely to be first-round considerations that could be of interest to Vikings fans (for the rest of the prospects, check out King's column).

Christian Ponder, QB, Florida State: "Showed a strong arm against Oklahoma, with good juice on intermediate throws. Seems similar to Mark Sanchez. Good feel for the timing of the drop-back passing game and should transition well to the NFL. Reads coverage well, and can stick throws into a tight window, essential for an NFL quarterback. Needs to work on manipulating the secondary and eye discipline, and on recognition of safeties on deep throws. Must get quicker with footwork on his drop. A little uncomfortable in a muddied pocket. Feet have to calm down under pressure. More of a touch passer than a fastball pitcher. Comfortable throwing the ball to the outside with timing."

Ricky Stanzi, QB, Iowa: "Has elements of Matt Schaub when he came out of Virginia -- slightly above average arm strength but understands the subtle nuances of the position. Ran an NFL offense at Iowa. Rhythmic and balanced -- comfortable in pass drops from center. Average arm strength. More of a touch passer. Good command of the pocket. Saw him against Arizona, and he consistently found the single coverage on the outside. Didn't drive the ball; not much velocity on the intermediate throws. Calm and poised, and understands check-downs. Showed excellent play-action command against Michigan. Against Ohio State, threw a big-time TD against a corner blitz. In the bowl game, he picked up his tempo when he read blitz. Has a chance to be a solid NFL starter with time."

Cosell also offered his opinion Clemson defensive end Da'Quan Bowers, who could be a consideration of the Vikings at No. 12:

"Quick athletic feet, but not explosive or sudden. Naturally strong with powerful hands. Tendency to play upright and lose leverage and power. More of a power rusher than a pure speed rusher. Don't see comparable athleticism and movement to Julius Peppers. Good closing speed, but not explosive off the edge like Dwight Freeney or DeMarcus Ware. Didn't strike me as the number one pick, but a strong upside."
