OVERVIEW

After arriving on the University of Alabama campus as one of the most prized recruits in the country, Julio Jones made the college football world take notice of his talent with an All-American true freshman campaign. But a sophomore season marred by injury left some wondering whether Jones' production would ever match the hype. As a junior in 2010, the receiver set out to prove his doubters wrong.

The result was a record-setting performance that garnered second-team All-American honors as well as first-team All-Southeastern Conference accolades. Jones shattered D.J. Hall's previous single-season school marks for receptions (67 in 2007) and receiving yards (1,056 in 2006) with 78 catches for 1,133 yards. He also managed seven touchdown catches to tie for fourth on the school's single-season record chart.

Jones is a big-bodied receiver who plays with physicality. When the ball is in his hands, he has the vision to rack up yards after the catch. His strength allows him to break through arm tackles, while his acceleration gives him the ability to run away from defenders. At the same time, Jones is a long strider with exceptional top-end speed and can get behind the defense as a vertical threat. He flashes strong, but inconsistent hands, and has had some problems with drops in his career.

Jones' presence has had a profound impact on the Crimson Tide aerial attack. In his debut season, Alabama turned in the nation's 97th-ranked passing game, averaging 171.14 yards per contest. The team saw marginal improvement during Jones' sophomore season, improving to 187.93 passing yards per game and a 92nd-overall ranking. But, when Jones contributed a record-breaking effort in 2010, the Tide's passing game saw its production rise to new heights, as Alabama averaged 261.15 aerial yards per game for a 27th ranking.

Jones has etched his name into nearly every receiving category in the Alabama record book. His 179 receptions are second all-time at the school behind D.J. Hall's mark of 194 (2004-07), while his 2,653 yards receiving are surpassed only by Hall's 2,923. He also tied Joe Jones (1980-83) for fourth in Crimson Tide history with 15 touchdown receptions, topped only by Dennis Homan (18; 1965-67), D.J. Hall (17; 2004-07) and Ozzie Newsome (16; 1974-77).

Jones was regarded as one of the nation's elite prep prospects at Foley High School (AL). He set school records for receptions, receiving yards, receiving touchdowns and total touchdowns, as he concluded his high school career with 194 catches for 3,287 yards (16.94 ypc) and 43 touchdowns. He added three scores on the ground, four scores on kickoff and punt returns, and two more on fumble returns to give him 52 total touchdowns.

Jones' athletic prowess also allowed him to excel as a member of Foley's track and field squad. As a sophomore, he won the state outdoor championship in the long jump (22-11) and triple jump (47-5). As a junior, he was named the Gatorade Track and Field Athlete of the Year for the state of Alabama after winning the state indoor high jump (6-6) and repeating outdoor titles in the long jump (23-8) and triple jump (49-1).

As a senior on the gridiron, Jones collected 68 receptions for 1,181 yards (17.37 ypc) and 16 touchdowns while leading his Lions squad to a 12-1 overall record, a Region 2 title and an appearance in the state quarterfinals. He was named "Mr. Football" for the state of Alabama and also took home the state Gatorade Player of the Year Award. His list of 2007 accolades included All-American selections by Parade Magazine, USA Today, EA Sports, Rivals.com and Scout.com. He added Birmingham News and Alabama Sportswriters Association All-State honors.

By the time his prep career came to a close, Jones was listed as the nation's top wide receiver by nearly every recruiting service. He was given the highest rating of five stars by Scout and Rivals, as the latter ranked him as the nation's fourth-best overall prospect. He was also listed as the nation's second overall recruit by SuperPrep and the top overall prospect by Sports Illustrated/Takkle.com.

Jones was offered football scholarships from countless universities across the country, including Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Florida State, LSU, Oklahoma and Texas Tech. "In the end I went with the choice that I felt most comfortable with, the one that felt like home and that was Alabama," Jones said. "I took a lot of visits up there and that's where I felt the best. I looked at their facilities, the campus and academics and it was as good as it got so that was good enough for me. I felt good with the coaches. They told me they were going to move me around and use me in different sets. I think I'll fit in fine."

And fit in fine he did, as Jones enrolled at the University of Alabama in 2008 and became just the 11th true freshman in school history to start a season opener. He started all 14 games and set every freshman receiving record in Crimson Tide annals, as he led the team with 58 receptions for 924 yards (15.93 ypc) and four touchdowns. His average of 4.14 receptions per game placed seventh in the Southeastern Conference, while his average of 66.00 receiving yards per game ranked fourth in the conference and 59th nationally.

Jones' exploits garnered Freshman All-American first-team honors by the Football Writers Association of America and Sporting News, as well an All-SEC second-team selection by the league's coaches and media. He was named the SEC Freshman of the Year and the Columbus (Ohio) Touchdown Club National Freshman of the Year. Jones also joined Mark Ingram as the only Tide players presented with the team's Offensive Achievement Award.

Injuries and inconsistency marred the star receiver's sophomore season. He suffered a bruised knee in the second game of the season vs. Florida International that forced him to miss the North Texas contest. Despite nagging ailments, Jones started all 13 games he played in and managed to lead the Tide's BCS National Championship squad with 43 receptions for 596 yards (13.86 ypc) and four touchdowns. His efforts earned him second-team All-SEC honors.

Jones bounced back with a record-breaking junior campaign that garnered All-American and all-conference honors, despite suffered a broken hand vs. South Carolina midway through the season. He started all 12 games and was the recipient of the Tide's Most Valuable Player Award. Jones led Alabama with 78 receptions for 1,133 yards (14.53 ypc) and seven touchdowns, adding 135 yards and two more scores on eight carries (16.88 ypc). His average of 6.00 receptions per game ranked third in the SEC and 25th nationally, while his 87.15 receiving yards per game placed second in the league and 17th in the country.

OFF-FIELD ISSUES
2009 Season…Jones and fellow Tide teammate Mark Ingram were initially ruled ineligible by the University of Alabama and the NCAA due to a Gulf Coast fishing trip taken with and paid for by 55-year old businessman Curtis Anderson during the spring. The pair were reinstated (9/2) after repayment of the cost of the trip, which was paid to charity. The NCAA announced its decision in a statement: "The NCAA student-athlete reinstatement staff has reinstated the eligibility of University of Alabama football student-athletes Julio Jones and Mark Ingram based on a condition of repayment. According to the facts of the case submitted by Alabama, the student-athletes received impermissible food, lodging, transportation and entertainment from an individual with whom one of the student-athletes had become acquainted prior to enrolling in college. Consistent with NCAA membership requirements, the institution reported the violation and declared the student-athletes ineligible. As part of the reinstatement request, the institution required the student-athletes to make repayment of the value of the impermissible benefits to charity. During the reinstatement process, the NCAA staff considers a number of factors including guidelines established by the NCAA Division I Committee on Student-Athlete Reinstatement, relevant case precedent, the student-athlete's responsibility for the violation, as well as any mitigating factors presented by the institution."
