Vikings don't get back into third round

For most of the offseason, Vikings vice president of player personnel Rick Spielman has been saying he would like to regain the third-round pick the Vikings gave up to acquire Randy Moss last season.

The third round came and went, however, and the Vikings didn't have a pick. Spielman may have had the opportunity to get it back when the Vikings were on the clock with their second-round pick (43rd overall). He said he received trade offers to move down, but he found too much value in Notre Dame tight end Kyle Rudolph.

"All the sudden our pick got very hot," Spielman said.

However, Spielman said after selecting Rudolph that the draft still held plenty of value on the third day, which the Vikings enter with seven picks remaining.

"Because this is a deep draft, if we don't move back into the third (round), (we're going to) have the ability to get a lot more players that will be able to come in and help us," Spielman said after the second-round selection of Rudolph. "To have the fourth and the two fives and two sixes and two sevens and without college free agency, that's going to help you get some players that at least you know you have."

Spielman said the Vikings can't talk to players they don't have an interest in drafting, per the rules of the lockout, which is on again after a court ruling Friday evening.

The draft starts up again at 11 a.m. Saturday with the fourth round and is expected to run until the early evening when the seventh round concludes.

The Vikings have the ninth pick in the fourth round (106th overall); the 8th and 19th in the fifth round (139 and 150 overall); the seventh and 35th in the sixth round (172 and 200); and the 13th and 35th in the seventh round (215 and 236). Their picks at Nos. 200 and 236 overall can't be traded because they are compensatory picks. Their 150th pick is from the New York Giants for the Sage Rosenfels/Darius Reynaud trade.

Coordinator, QB coach have their plan for Ponder

Leslie Frazier has mentioned several times this offseason his affinity for a quarterback who is able to extend plays and throw outside the pocket. That – along with the character questions – is likely a big reason that the Vikings passed on Ryan Mallett.

It's also one of the things they liked about Christian Ponder, along with his decision-making.

"I think one of his strengths is throwing on the run," offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave said. "I think the other one is good decisions, especially in the red area. I think most teams in the NFL ask their quarterback to make some plays in the red area, especially when it's third-and-goal outside the 5-yard line, and Christian had a lot of those experiences at Florida State. His coach asked him to make a lot of plays in crunch situations and he came through."

The biggest question with Ponder was his ability to throw the deep ball. Quarterbacks coach Craig Johnson said the Vikings had no concerns there after putting him through a private workout in Tallahassee. Musgrave said it wasn't a big concern going into the workout either.

"I don't remember it being a question. We put each quarterback that we worked out through the same paces, through the same routine so we could compare and contrast," Musgrave said. "He was right up there with the top guys in terms of arm strength and accuracy."

Ponder's intelligence – he had a 3.7 grade-point average with a bachelor's and master's degree from Florida State – could help him make the transition from college to the pros quickly. Musgrave is also aware of the dangers of playing a rookie quarterback too soon.

"Depends on the player and his strengths and his dominant traits that he brings to this level. I think another critical factor is how good is the team around him? Can you be effective without him being the star of the show, or would he get exposed like Jim Plunkett did with the Patriots and got crushed those initial years, which also hurts a player's confidence," Musgrave said. "I think kids come out of college with a lot of confidence, which they should. They were at the top of the level at which they competed. So you want to try to maintain that through those growing pains."

Musgrave has helped work Matt Ryan into a successful start in Atlanta. Johnson was credited for helping develop Vince Young in Tennessee.

"What I have found out with all rookies – and this is quarterbacks and general, but specifically rookies – if you give them a plan as we've talked about that they're comfortable in, they will play fast," Johnson said. "When they play fast and know what they're doing, they usually play a lot better."

The Vikings' trade possibilities

The reaction of many fans is that the Vikings could have gotten Christian Ponder much lower than the 12th pick overall. Ponder said he was told he could go anywhere from the eighth overall pick, where the Tennessee Titans picked Jake Locker, to the middle of the second round.

The problem with the Vikings trading down in the first round is that there were no willing trade partners when they were on the clock. But did they consider trading up to get to get Blaine Gabbert at No. 9, like the Jacksonville Jaguars did? The feeling I got at Winter Park was that was a consideration but they didn't want to pay the price that Jacksonville did – a first- and second-round pick, which would have left the Vikings with Gabbert but then no other picks until the fourth round.

"I know Jacksonville ended up giving a first- and a second-round pick for Blaine, and we weren't going to be able to do that," vice president of player personnel Rick Spielman said.

So what happens Friday when the second round opens? The Vikings still don't have a third-rounder because that was relinquished to the New England Patriots, who might soon be making every third pick on Day 2, in the Rent-A-Randy Moss trade. But could the Vikings trade down in the second round to acquire a third-round pick?

According to the draft value chart, their 43rd pick is worth 470 points. In order to get a pick in the middle of the third round, they would have to trade down to the bottom of the second round to make the point values on the chart come close to matching up. That might be a possibility, but it seems like the difference between the 43rd pick and the 64th pick might not be worth it. More than likely, they will wait and see who is available at 43 before trying to make any final decisions on that possibility.
