Scouting Report: Eddie Johnson

TFY Draft Preview's Tony Pauline gives his analysis on the Vikings' first selection in the sixth round, punter Eddie Johnson.

Name: Eddie Johnson School: Idaho State Year: 4Sr

Ht: 6-4 Wt: 230 40: 5.15 Pos: P

Bio: Transferred from Orange Coast Community College prior to the 2001 season and has since won All-Conference and All-America honors. Averaged 46.2 yards on 51 punts as a senior with a long of 80 yards, placing 15 inside the 20-yard line. Led the nation as a junior with a net punting average of 44.3 yards, a year in which only 22 of his 49 punts were returned. Performed well at the Combine and was the best punter on hand.

Pos: Big bodied punter with the leg to match. Has the ball explode off his foot, drives his punts and gets tremendous hang time. Consistently kicks for long yardage, and though not a good directional kicker gets hang time on his pooch punts.

Neg: Not very quick getting the ball off his foot nor is he an exceptional directional kicker. Had the advantage of punting indoors.

Analysis: The first of possibly two punters to be selected this April and if he handles the elements, should make a team next September.
