Big crowd sees defense ahead of offense

The biggest crowd in the team's training camp history, according to Vikings coach Leslie Frazier, packed Blakeslee Stadium Saturday night. The Vikings didn't scrimmage and didn't even tackle to the ground, but the crowd, announced at 9,145, seemed whipped up and ready to applaud any positive sign.

Early on, they cheered when Percy Harvin sprinted through the kickoff coverage team for a touchdown, despite the fact that Harvin was touched early in the return.

But they couldn't have been too excited about how the offense looked early. During the first full-team session, starter Donovan McNabb would have been sacked on his drop-back. After getting touched, he threw a pass to Adrian Peterson that was tipped and intercepted by linebacker E.J. Henderson.

The touch sacks continued to be compiled by an aggressive defense throughout the night.

A few quick notes from the night:

* Joe Webb and Christian Ponder rotated taking second-team reps behind McNabb. They were each sacked in their first full-team series as well.

* Peterson gave safety Simeon Castille a "welcome to the NFL" moment when he put a quick cutback move that left Castille grasping for air during a run-drill session.

* Ponder connected with Emmanuel Arceneaux for a touchdown during his red zone session.

* Jamarca Sanford got the first-team reps at safety alongside Husain Abdullah.

* Charlie Johnson continued to be the first-team left tackle and Chris DeGeare the first-team right guard.

* McNabb and Webb both drew the defense offsides with hard counts.

We'll have a more in-depth story on the scrimmage with select quotes on the front page of VikingUpdate.com later.

Favre on Dolphins: 'I don't have any interest': Hot News for QB Brett Favre

Favre sounding, looking like a retired man

On Aug. 3 last year, the Star Tribune reported that Brett Favre told teammates and coaches he wasn't returning to football. A team source confirmed the essence of that report but told Viking Update it wasn't over yet, and it proved not to be. Then-Vikings coach Brad Childress pressed on with his persistent approach to convince his savior/quarterback to return to Minnesota. Eventually, Childress dispatched Favre confidantes Ryan Longwell, Steve Hutchinson and Jared Allen to Mississippi to convince Favre to give it one more go.

Favre eventually obliged, but this year things are dramatically different. Favre filed his retirement papers and every indication along the way has been consistent that his NFL career is over. Longwell, one of his closest friends in the NFL, has maintained that Favre is done.

On Friday, the Miami Herald sent reporter Jeff Darlington to Hattiesburg to track down Favre at his usual warmup to the NFL – Oak Grove High School – to address rumors that he might sign with the Dolphins. This time, Favre wasn't throwing to high school receivers and he apparently hasn't been getting his arm going at all recently.

"I haven't heard anything, and I don't have any interest," Favre "snapped," according to the Herald report.

The story paints a picture of man whose body won't allow him to come back to the NFL. It reads, "His body moved slowly and gingerly, each step appearing to take as much deliberate effort as the next. Brett Favre didn't look like a man capable of returning to the NFL on Friday."

This time, it may not be up to Brett Favre. This time, it's looking like his body has already made the decision for him and it's probably time for Favre fans and media to accept it.

Vikings camp, Day 3: Shoulder pads bring out the hitting

After slow progress in the first two days of camp, the hitting started in earnest on Wednesday as the shoulder pads came on for the first time.

"I like it. That's how they're going to have to play on Sundays," Leslie Frazier said with a smile as he walked to the locker room after practice.

The hitting did cause a few moments of concern, but not no one seemed to walk away much worse for the wear.

Safety Jamarca Sanford got his feet taken out from under him when he went up high to try to snare an overthrown pass by Joe Webb to Visanthe Shiancoe. Sanford came down hard on his tailbone and stayed on the ground for about 15 seconds before walking to the sideline. He said he would probably come away with a bruised tailbone, but he was back on defense a short time later.

Percy Harvin also received a couple of shots, most notably from linebacker Heath Farwell. Just as a pass bounced off Harvin in the middle of the field, Farwell arrive and hit Harvin in the upper body, causing him to flip backwards and land hard on his back. The hit didn't even seem to faze the slot receiver, who bounced up and didn't miss any time.

While they have a walk-through practice Wednesday afternoon, the intensity could ratchet up again tomorrow when full pads come on for the first time.

* Thursday is also the first time players who signed new contracts can join the team for practice.

* With Bryant McKinnie no longer part of the team and Charlie Johnson unable to practice yet, Pat Brown took most of the first-team snaps at left tackle. DeMarcus Love served that role with the second team.

* Johnson is now wearing McKinnie's No. 74 and Scott Kooistra switched from 67 to 73, Johnson's previous number.

* Cornnerback Cedric Griffin took most of the first-team snaps as he works his way back into the lineup after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament last year.

* With Husain Abdullah unable to practice until Thursday and Madieu Williams released last week, Jamarca Sanford and Tyrell Johnson were the first-team safeties.

* Linebacker Erin Henderson is in the same situation as Abdullah (they were both restricted free agents), so Heath Farwell and Jasper Brinkley split reps at weakside linebacker.

* Farwell snagged an interception when he picked off a Joe Webb pass that deflected off Greg Camarillo's hands.
