Vikings missing three offensive starters

While the Vikings ramp up the playing time for their starters as the preseason progresses, they will be without three likely starters tonight – WR Percy Harvin, TE Visanthe Shiancoe and G Anthony Herrera.

None of those scratches for Saturday night's game in Seattle were unexpected. Harvin is dealing with a rib/abdominal injury that kept him out of practice for most of this week and Shiancoe didn't practice at all this week because of a hamstring injury. Herrera, the incumbent starter at right guard who is facing competition for that spot, began working with the first-team offense on a limited basis this week but shared time there with Scott Kooistra, as well as Chris DeGeare and Ryan Cook, as Herrera continues his comeback from a torn anterior cruciate ligament suffered on Nov. 21.

Other players not in the lineup against Seattle are CB Asher Allen (toe), S Simeon Castille (hamstring), FB Asiata (hip flexor), LBs Heath Farwell (hamstring) and Kenny Onatolu (foot), WR Greg Camarillo (groin) and DE D'Aundre Reed (calf).

Cornerback Cedric Griffin is scheduled to make the start as his comeback from knee surgery continues. He didn't play last Saturday but is expected to get a series or two of work.

Non-injury related scratches from last week, like Antoine Winfield, Kevin Williams and Jared Allen, are also expected to play.

Harvin, Shiancoe out for Saturday

Wide receiver Percy Harvin (ribs) and tight end Visanthe Shiancoe (hamstring) headline a group of players expected to sit out the Vikings' second preseason game at Seattle on Saturday, head coach Leslie Frazier said Thursday.

Frazier said he expected Shiancoe and Harvin would be able to resume practicing at some point next week.

Harvin left Tuesday's practice and has sat out the last two days of work.

"This injury is more of them protecting me, just a little abdominal strain. Just [hurts] when I breath sometimes, so they wanted me to sit out," Harvin said.

He tried to get on the field, he said, showing up for practice with his helmet.

"I'm hard-headed so I tried to put it off. Coach had a plan so he wanted me to shut it down today, so it's his call," Harvin said.

Also expected to be sidelined Saturday, according to Frazier, are right guard Anthony Herrera (knee), fullback Matt Asiata (hip flexor), linebackers Heath Farwell (hamstring) and Kenny Onatolu (foot) and receiver Greg Camarillo (groin).

Ryan Cook or Chris DeGeare will likely get the start at guard in Herrera's place, and Scott Kooistra is also an option, Frazier said.

Erin Henderson has been limited the last two days after bumping his knee on Wednesday, but he "should be fine" to play Saturday, Frazier said. The same goes for Asher Allen, who was given the day off with a toe injury.

Another change to the starting lineup is Tyrell Johnson, who will get the start at strong safety in place of Jamarca Sanford as those two battle for the spot vacated with the release of Madieu Williams.

Rice says he ‘didn't feel it' from Vikings

Sidney Rice told the St. Paul Pioneer Press that the Seattle Seahawks made a big effort to sign him once free agency started and the Vikings didn't give him enough attention. The Seahawks' persistence and a five-year, $41 million contract with $18.5 million in guarantees netted them the talented receiver.

"If you hear from [the Vikings] throughout the rest of the season telling you they are going to be in touch, are going to negotiate and it never happens, you've got to wonder - do they really want me there or not?" Rice told the Pioneer Press. "I just didn't feel it. … It came down to Seattle showing me they wanted me to be a part of the program."

That differs from a version of the free-agent process we heard. The Vikings and Seahawks were the only teams in serious negotiations for Rice, according to a source, but the $18.5 million in guarantees was too much for Minnesota's tolerance given the Vikings' tight salary-cap situation and Rice's injury history. The Vikings reportedly have about $363,000 left in cap space, and that's after releasing Bryant McKinnie and Madieu Williams and restructuring the contract of Bernard Berrian.

In four seasons with the Vikings, Rice played in 48 of a possible 64 games and started just 26 of them, mainly because of injuries. He battled ankle and posterior cruciate ligament injuries in his first two seasons before a healthy, breakout season in 2009 with quarterback Brett Favre. During that season, he caught 83 passes for 1,312 yards, but a hip injury sustained in the NFC Championship Game in January 2010 sidelined him for the first 10 games last year after he elected to have surgery during the preseason.

"It was a lot of ups and downs," Rice told the Pioneer Press of his four-year Vikings career. "I'm not really one to speak on myself that way, so I will let the critics critique me on that. My ultimate goal was to be healthy and make plays on the field. In Minnesota, I did the exact same thing I wanted to do here, and that's to give my team the chance to win."

The Vikings will face Rice and former Vikings QB Tarvaris Jackson on Saturday in the second preseason game.

Harvin could be sidelined Saturday

Percy Harvin's rib injury kept him on the sidelines for Wednesday's two-hour practice and may keep him out of Saturday's second preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks.

"It was a little bit sore a couple days ago and just felt like it'd probably be wise just to hold him back and just let him completely heal, as opposed to getting bumped or getting hit," Frazier said. "Don't want any setbacks."

Harvin bruised his ribs last week during a practice in Mankato, but on Tuesday he was tended to by the training staff about halfway through the practice and sat out of the rest of it.

He, along with several other injured players, went inside the building for treatment after the team stretched and then came back out later during practice.

"If we don't do anything with him tomorrow, we'll probably hold him back. So, we'll see how he feels tomorrow," Frazier said.

Also sidelined on Wednesday were safety Simeon Castille, FB Matt Asiata, LB Kenny Onatolu, LB Heath Farwell, TE Visanthe Shiancoe, WR Greg Camarillo and DE D'Aundre Reed.

Harvin sits out second half of practice

Vikings receiver Percy Harvin left practice about halfway through and stood on the sidelines the rest of the practice after receiving a little attention from the training staff.

Harvin gave reporters the thumbs-up after practice, but players are often hesitant to address their injury status.

Vikings offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave said he wasn't sure what the injury was and it could be a potential flare-up of the rib injury Harvin suffered during the Mankato portion of training camp.

"I'd have to check with Eric [Sugarman, head athletic trainer]," Musgrave said. "I don't know if he still has his ribs bothering him, but we'll check I'm sure in our post-practice report."

Also sitting out Tuesday's practice were tight end Visanthe Shiancoe (hamstring), linebacker Heath Farewell (hamstring), linebacker Kenny Onatolu (foot) and safety Simeon Castille. Shiancoe and Castille ran the sidelines for conditioning during the early part of practice.

"I did try to give Shank a hard time and remind him that we did draft a guy in the second round and he's not looking too bad," Musgrave said. "But Shank is coming back as fast as he can and we're looking forward to getting him back, hopefully next week. If not next week, I'm sure he's working like crazy to get out here and get with his teammates."

Report: Vikings tight against the salary cap

This is no surprise, but it's worth reiterating how close the Vikings are to the salary cap.

The team has less than a million dollars left in salary-cap space – $376,354.00 to be exact, according to NFL.com.

NFL teams had to be in compliance with the salary cap by the official start of the new league year. Because of the delay in getting a collective bargaining agreement ratified, that wasn't until Aug. 4 this year. By releasing safety Madieu Williams, left tackle Bryant McKinnie and restructuring the contract of receiver Bernard Berrian, the Vikings were able to get under the cap by the deadline.

The Vikings have spent $123,553,646.00 in total salary, according to the league's official website, meaning the Vikings took advantage of a special cap credit this year that gave teams the option for $3 million in additional cap room by taking up to $1 million off the cap charge for up to three players with five or more accrued seasons. That credit will drop to $1.5 million next year with a maximum of $500,000 per player. So, in essence, the salary cap is $123.375 million this year.

The cap is listed at $120.375 million, but that doesn't include the special cap credits allowed this year. The top 51 players on the roster are counted against the cap, but the Vikings could create additional room by extending the contracts of Chad Greenway and Adrian Peterson and lowering their cap impact in 2011. Both are scheduled to make in excess of $10 million this year, and this is the final year of their contracts.

The Bears have $19,342,968.00 in cap space, the Lions have $995,047.34 and the Packers have $12,736,997.00, according to NFL.com. On average, NFL teams have $11,053,871.70 in space, according to NFL.com.
