Vikings trail 9-7 at the half

The battle of the 0-3 teams is living up to its billing as a contest between two bad teams, or at least two ugly offenses.

Donovan McNabb has completed 9 of 12 passes for 125 yards, one touchdown and one interception, but the stats can be misleading. McNabb has been bailed out with some solid adjustments by his receivers and some breakaway receptions to help pad the yardage. However, the Vikings' touchdown was a pinpoint pass by McNabb to Devin Aromashodu for the 34-yard score.

McNabb has also looked out of sync with his running backs. One of those resulted in a fumble that Adrian Peterson recovered. Another turned into a busted play when it looked like McNabb expected to hand the ball off to Percy Harvin to end the first drive.

Once again, the Vikings have been hurt by penalties. They have four for 35 yards, including a key third-down facemask by Everson Griffen when he sacked Matt Cassel on the Chiefs' first drive. That extended Kansas City's drive in which they took a 3-0 lead with the first of three Ryan Succop field goals.

The Chiefs haven't looked much better, as Cassel has struggled with accuracy and got into heated words with head coach Todd Haley on the sidelines after one incompletion. Cassel was 8 for 15 for 99 yards.

E.J. Henderson, Sanford both active

The Vikings will apparently be near full strength playing the Chiefs, as linebacker E.J. Henderson and safety Jamarca Sanford, both starters who were questionable on the injury report Friday, are active.

Henderson has been dealing with soreness and swelling in his knee since Week 1 and had his knee drained four days after the opener. He said on Friday that limiting his snaps would be a smart move to keep him active in the coming weeks.

"If I was being honest with myself, maybe when I look at the tape maybe I could see myself hobbling a little bit, but on Sundays you always feel like, ‘I'm feeling pretty good out here,'" Henderson said Friday. "I definitely think it showed a little bit, especially toward the end of the game."

The Vikings must feel relatively comfortable with Henderson's status since backup middle linebacker Xavier Adibi is inactive. If Henderson snaps are limited, his younger brother Erin would likely slide to middle linebacker with Kenny Onatolu or Larry Dean assisting at weakside linebacker.

Sanford (thigh) appeared on the injury report Thursday, but was a full participant all week.

The Vikings had CB Brandon Burton, S Mistral Raymond, LB Xavier Adibi, C Brandon Fusco, T DeMarcus Love, WR Greg Camarillo and DE D'Aundre Reed inactive.

That means that the two questionable (Henderson and Sanford) and all six probable (Asher Allen, Chris Cook, Tyrell Johnson, Jim Kleinsasser, Adrian Peterson and Kevin Williams) players on Friday's injury report are active for the Vikings.

E.J. Henderson, Sanford questionable

The Vikings have two defensive starters – middle linebacker E.J. Henderson and safety Jarmarca Sanford – listed as questionable on their injury report.

Henderson has been bothered by soreness and swelling in his left knee, something he attributed to the titanium rod that was inserted into his leg after he fractured his femur in December 2009 playing against the Arizona Cardinals.

Vikings coach Leslie Frazier indicated that Henderson's snaps could be limited, but they expect to play him Sunday at Kansas City.

"Still a little sore. We'll see how he does tomorrow, but we're expecting to play him, but how much we'll play him, we'll see," Frazier said Friday.

Henderson said he thought limiting his snaps would be a smart move for his long-term availability.

"If I was being honest with myself, maybe when I look at the tape maybe I could see myself hobbling a little bit, but on Sundays you always feel like, ‘I'm feeling pretty good out here,'" Henderson said. "I definitely think it showed a little bit, especially toward the end of the game."

Henderson was the only player that was limited in Friday's practice.

Running back Adrian Peterson, who was kneed in the calf on Sunday, was one of six Vikings listed as probable. Peterson didn't participate in Wednesday's practice, was limited on Thursday and was a full participant on Friday.

"He finished well today. He looks to be full strength," Frazier said. "He was fine today. Nothing that he wasn't able to do."

CB Asher Allen (toe), CB Chris Cook (groin), S Tyrell Johnson (hip), TE Jim Kleinsasser (elbow), Peterson (calf) and DT Kevin Williams (foot) are all listed as probable, defined as a "virtual certainty" they will play.

Lingering concern for E.J. Henderson?

Running back Adrian Peterson (calf) and linebacker E.J. Henderson (knee) returned to practice on at least a limited basis after sitting out Wednesday because of injuries.

Vikings coach Leslie Frazier said Peterson went through the entire practice with no ill effects from the calf injury, but there appears to be more caution concerning Henderson's condition.

"He looked good. He's still a little tender. We'll have to see how he does tomorrow," Frazier said after Thursday's practice. "We'll have to take a look at him tomorrow and see how he comes along. He was a little tender today. Coming on this turf probably wasn't the greatest thing, but we needed to do it."

The Vikings practiced inside on artificial turf for the first time this season at Winter Park because of high wind gusts.

Henderson has been dealing with soreness and swelling in his knee left knee and had it drained four days after the season opener but hasn't missed any starts. Frazier said that was the only time this season the knee has been drained. He had it drained once last year on a Friday and didn't miss the next game, but this year's issues are happening earlier in the season.

"Last year I don't remember him this early having to miss as much time as he's missing right now," Frazier said. "I'd have to go back and look. I know late in the year you could see things were changing a little bit, but not this early. But the circumstances were different, too. He hadn't gone through the entire season like he has after going through last season.

"I'm hoping we don't get in a situation where he's going to have to have his knee drained periodically. We're hoping that through rest and our monitoring his reps that he'll get better over time."

Joining Henderson and Peterson as being limited in Thursday's practice were safety Tyrell Johnson (hip) and tight end Jim Kleinsasser (elbow). Safety Jamarca Sanford (thigh) was added to injury report but was a full participant, as were cornerbacks Asher Allen (toe) and Chris Cook (groin) and defensive tackle Kevin Williams (foot).

For the Chiefs, DL Brandon Bair returned to practice as a full participant after missing Wednesday because of illness, and S Jon McGraw (shin), CB Brandon Flowers (ankle) and WR Jon Baldwin (thumb) remained limited.
