As bad as the Vikings 2011 season has been, Vikings fans everywhere held their collective breath when they saw Adrian Peterson go down with an ankle injury in the second quarter of the Vikings' 27-21 loss to the Oakland Raiders.
Peterson was taken off the field on a cart and, while he joined teammates on the sideline in the second half, he came back without his helmet and later the Vikings took away his pads and jersey.
Peterson had X-rays at halftime that came back negative, but he said the pain he experienced was pretty intense.
"I just got my ankle caught up on a defender and it got twisted up pretty bad," Peterson said. "The X-ray came back negative, so that's a plus."
Peterson said he has suffered ankle injuries before and, when they happen, he doesn't get a lot of swelling in the area, which has him uncertain about the full extent of the damage – which will be discovered tomorrow when the ankle gets an MRI.
"It didn't swell up," Peterson said. "I don't really swell up much, but I know it's all within the ligaments. We'll see tomorrow."
While Peterson was talking in positive terms, his teammates were openly wondering about the severity because, if anyone could come back from that type of injury, Peterson, with his high threshold for pain, would be as likely as anyone to return.
"When he didn't come back, we definitely knew he was hurt," Percy Harvin said. "He is a guy that plays hurt all the time."
We will likely know more tomorrow after Peterson has the MRI performed, but he said the thought of shutting down his season – even for a week or two – isn't in the cards unless the medical staff tells him he has to.
"No, not at all," Peterson said of the prospect of shutting down. "That's not in my DNA. I'm going to try and get back as fast as I can and, God willing, I'll be up and ready to run this weekend."
