The Vikings will interview former Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Raheem Morris on Friday for a "high-level position" on defense, according to ESPN. The Vikings are likely looking at him as a potential defensive coordinator.
Morris is a disciple of the Tampa-2 defense, which is the preferred defensive scheme for head coach Leslie Frazier, although Morris was never a defensive coordinator in the NFL, going from defensive backs coach to head coach three years ago. The Bucs were 17-31 during his three seasons at the helm.
In 2011, the Bucs defense was ranked 30th in the league – last against the run and 21st against the pass. The Vikings finished 21st on defense – 11th against the run and 26th against the pass. The Bucs, who finished the season 4-12 and on a 10-game losing streak, had 14 interceptions, while the Vikings had only eight.
Tampa Bay also gave up a franchise-record and league-high 494 points in 2011.
The Bucs were top-ranked pass defense in 2007 with Morris as their defensive backs coach.
Vikings defensive coordinator Fred Pagac had to give up some of his control of the defense during the second half of the season as Frazier became more involved. Pagac hasn't been fired yet, but Frazier appears to be taking a similar approach to how he handled replacing former coordinators Darrell Bevell (offense) and Brian Murphy (special teams) last year at this time – keeping them on staff until finding a replacement.
After Rick Spielman was promoted to general manager on Tuesday, it was made clear that Frazier would continue to have the final say on his coaching staff.
The 35-year-old Morris interviewed for the defensive backs job with the Washington Redskins on Thursday but is reportedly seeking a position with more responsibility.
