NFL Individual Records Set/Tied In 1998

  • Most points by a kicker, season- Gary Anderson, 164. Breaks old record held by Washington Redskins’ Mark Mosely record of 161 in 1983.
  • Most consecutive field goals made- Gary Anderson, 40 (5 in S.F., 1997 and 35 in Minnesota, 1998). Streak continues into 1999. Breaks old record of 31 held by Minnesota’s Fuad Reveiz set in 1995.
  • Highest FG & PAT kicking percentage in a season- Gary Anderson, 100.0, (94-of-94). Breaks old record of 98.4 by Atlanta’s Norm Johnson in 1993 (60-of-61).
  • Most touchbacks on kickoffs (kicking off from 30-yard line),- Mitch Berger, 40. Breaks old record of 29 held by New York Jets’ John Hall. Denver’s Brad Daluiso had 52 when teams kicked off from 35-yard line.
  • Most 40-yard TD receptions, season- Randy Moss. Ties record held by Los Angeles’ Elroy "Crazy Legs" Hirsch in 1951.
  • Most touchdown recpetions, season, rookie- Randy Moss, 17. Breaks old record of 13 held by Bill Howton in 1952 and John Jefferson in 1979.
  • Most touchdown receptions by a tandem- Randy Moss & Cris Carter, 29 (Moss-17, Carter-12). Breaks the old record of 27 held by a pair of San Francisco 49er duos, Jerry Rice (22) and Mike Wilson (5) or Dwight Clark (5) in 1987 and by Rice (17) and John Taylor (10) in 1989.

  • Points in a season- Gary Anderson, 164. Breaks old record of 132 by Chuck Foreman, 1975 and Fuad Reveiz, 1994.
  • Points in a season, rookie- Randy Moss, 106. Breaks old record of 60 by Sammy White, 1976.
  • Career touchdowns- Cris Carter, 82, 1990-98. Breaks old record of 76 held by Bill Brown, 1962-74.
  • Most consecutive games scoring a touchdown- Randy Moss, 7 (11/16-12/26). Ties record held by Chuck Foreman (9/15/74-10/27/74). Moss’ record will continue into 1999 regular season.
  • Most games with a touchdown, season- Randy Moss, 11. Breaks old record of 10 held by Terry Allen (1992) and Cris Carter (1995).
  • Most players with 10 TDs, season- 3, Randy Moss (17), Cris Carter (12), Leroy Hoard (10). Breaks old record of 2 in 1976, Chuck Foreman (14), Sammy White (10).

  • Most points after touchdown made in a season- Gary Anderson, 59. Breaks old record of 48 by Chuck Nelson, 1988.

  • Most 50+ yard runs, season- Robert Smith, 3. Ties his own record set in 1997.
  • Most yards rushing by a tandem, season- 1,666, Robert Smith (1,187) & Leroy Hoard (479). Breaks old record of 1,617 by Terry Allen (1,201) and Roger Craig (416).

Passing

  • Highest quarterback rating, season (qualifiers)- Randall Cunningham, 106.0. Breaks old record of 93.2 by Fran Tarkenton (1973).
  • Most consecutive games with 300 yards passing- Randall Cunningham, 3, (at Dallas, vs. Chicago, at Baltimore). Ties record held by Warren Moon ’94, ’95 and Tommy Kramer ’85.
  • Most touchdown passes in a season- Randall Cunningham, 34. Breaks old record of 33 by Warren Moon in 1995.
  • Most games four or more TD passes, season- Randall Cunningham, 4. Breaks old record of 3 held by Fran Tarkenton, 1961 and Tommy Kramer, 1981.

Punting

  • Highest gross punting average, game (minimum 4 punts)- 55.8, Mitch Berger, vs. Cincinnati. Breaks old record of 54.0 held by Harry Newsome, ( vs. Phoenix, 10/13/91, 5-270).
  • Highest net punting average, game (minimum 4 punts)- 48.2, Mitch Berger, vs. Cincinnati. Breaks old record of 47.8 held by Greg Coleman (vs. Pittsburgh, 9/21/86, 4-191).

Punt Returns

  • Most seasons leading team in punt returns- David Palmer, 5, 1994-98 (ties Charlie West, 1968-72).
  • Highest average yardage, career (minimum 75 returns)- David Palmer, 10.6 (140-1,484).

Kick Returns

  • David Palmer became the seventh player to return a kickoff for a touchdown at Baltimore (12/19) with his 88-yarder. The last Viking to return a kickoff for a TD was Herschel Walker at Philadelphia, 1/19/89.

Combined Returns

  • Most combined kick/punt returns, career- David Palmer, 1994-98, 252 (p-140, k-112). Breaks old record of 202 by Leo Lewis, 1981-91.
  • Combined kick/punt return yards, season- David Palmer, 1,465 (p-289, k-1,176). Breaks old record of 1,435 by Eddie Payton, 1980 (p-251, k-1,184).

Defensive and Miscellaneous

  • Most seasons selected to AFC-NFC Pro Bowls- Randall McDaniel, 10, 1989-98. Breaks old record of 9 by Alan Page, 1968-76.
  • Most games started by a guard- Randall McDaniel, 172, 1988-98. Breaks his own record of 156.

Interceptions

  • Most interception return yards, season- Jimmy Hitchcock, 242 (7-242). Breaks old record of 236 by Charlie West in 1971.
  • Most interception returns for touchdown, season- Jimmy Hitchcock, 3. Breaks record of 2 held by Audray McMillan, 1992, Anthony Parker, 1994 and Dewayne Washington, 1994.

Fumbles

  • Longest fumble return- Dwayne Rudd, 94t vs. Chicago (12/6). Breaks old record of 88t held by Ed Sharockman at Detroit (12/9/62).
  • Opponent fumbles returned for touchdown, season- Dwayne Rudd, 2 (vs. Cincinnati, vs. Chicago). Breaks old record of 1 held by many players.

Sacks

  • Most QB sacks by a linebacker, season- Ed McDaniel, 7. Breaks old record of 6 by Matt Blair, 1981 and Broderick Thomas, 1995.

  • Most victories, season- 15. Breaks old record of 12 in 1969, ’70, ’73, ’75.
  • Most wins at home, season- 8. Ties record set in 1989.
  • Most players selected to Pro Bowl- 9. Ties record set in 1975, ’88.

  • Highest average points per game- 34.8. Breaks old record of 27.4 in 1965.
  • Most touchdowns, season- 64. Breaks old record of 49 in 1988.
  • Most yards gained, season- 6, 264. Breaks old record of 5,938 in 1995.
