OVERVIEW

While most of the early first-round talk centers around quarterbacks Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III, a late bloomer is making a strong case to be the next passer to hear his name called on draft day. Much like the Seabiscuit, Ryan Tannehill is the "dark horse" in the race to follow the two All-Americans into the pro ranks.

The former flanker spent his first two seasons and a good portion of his junior campaign competing as a flanker for the Aggies, but former head coach, Mike Sherman, who had always been intrigued with Tannehill's athleticism, felt that the athlete's path to the National Football League would benefit from a position change.

With Sherman now a member of the Miami Dolphins coaching staff, rumors have the former Aggies coach campaigning for his new team to select his former project. The TAMU prospect underwent foot surgery in January that prevented him from playing in the 2012 Senior Bowl or participating in agility tests at the NFL Scouting Combine, but with his old coach pulling for him and teams recognizing that this raw talent is on the cusp of emerging, he could become the steal of the draft.

Quarterbacking is not something new for Tannehill, just something he had to put on the "backburner" for his first 29 games in an Aggies' uniform. Prior to his arrival at A&M, the
Rivals.com Texas Top 100 member was a defensive back, punter, receiver and quarterback for head coach Tim Holt at Big Spring High School in Texas. He was rated the 21st-best dual-threat quarterback in the nation by Rivals.com and regarded as the 58th-best quarter-back in the nation by Scout.com.

The Prep Star All-Region was also familiar with life at College Station, as he was a regular attendee at the A&M Football Summer Camps while in high school. As a prep sophomore, he played 10 games in the secondary for the Steers. Moving to the offensive unit, he was a two-time All-District 4-4A choice as a junior and senior. In 2005, he threw for 1,410 yards and gained 822 yards rushing, but the team struggled to a 4-8 record.

Tannehill grew up a Texas Tech fan as his father, Tim, played football there from 1985–87. His mother also attended Tech. Growing up, Ryan went to watch Tech games each year and even sported a small Tech uniform as a child. Tim played his first two seasons at quarterback before switching to receiver his final season. Although Ryan aspired to play quarterback for Texas Tech, the school did not recruit him.

Tannehill had received scholarship from Texas A&M, Texas Christian, Houston, Tulsa, and Texas-El Paso, but on July 11th, 2006, he signed his national letter-of-intent to join the Aggies football program. He was originally scheduled to play quarterback, playing that position while red-shirting during the 2007 season.

There was a coaching change prior to Tannehill's second season at A&M, with Mike Sherman took over as head coach. In summer camp, Tannehill competed vs. veteran quarterback Stephen McGee and redshirt sophomore Jerrod Johnson for the starting quarterback position. He finished third in the contest, behind Johnson and then McGee. Sherman, whose offense utilizes true receivers, moved him to receiver.

In his fifth game, he posted freshman school records of 210 yards on 12 catches vs. Kansas State. He gained 104 yards with a score on five catches the next week, vs. Texas Tech, the team that shunned him during the recruiting trails. After his six receptions for 78 yards in the Iowa State game, he broke the freshman school records for receptions and receiving yards.

In his first career start at quarterback, Tannehill led the Aggies to a 45–27 victory over Texas Tech. He set a school record with his 449 passing yards and also made a 33-yard pooch punt, his first career kick. He again quarterbacked the Aggies to a victory over No. 11 Oklahoma, which moved the team into the top 25. He helped the team maintain the top 25 ranking through victories over Baylor and No. 9 Nebraska.

During the Nebraska game, Tannehill punted twice since the starter was injured. He and his team defeated Texas to finish off the regular season. For his junior campaign, the All-Big Twelve Conference honorable mention connected on 152-of-234 tosses (64.96%) for 1,638 yards, thirteen touchdowns and six interceptions. He scored one more time while gaining 76 yards on 51 carries and tallied 1,714 yards in total offense.

Now fully entrenched as the team's quarterback, Tannehill guided an offense that ranked seven in the nation, averaging 490.23 yards per game, as they also averaged 39.08 points, the 11th-best average in the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision ranks. He garnered Academic All-Big Twelve Conference honors for the third time and was named an All-American honorable mention. In thirteen starting assignments, he totaled 4,050 yards, the 12th-best total in the nation. He gained 3,744 aerial yards with 29 touchdowns and 15 interceptions while completing 327-of-531 passes (61.58%). He also ran for four touchdowns.

Tannehill was invited to play in the 2012 Senior Bowl, but he had to decline, due to a foot injury that he suffered while working out after the Meineke Car Care Bowl. During a January passing drill, he broke a fifth metatarsal in his foot, an injury that required surgery. After surgery that was performed by Carolina Panthers team physician Robert Anderson, he wore a walking boot for several weeks before discarding it in mid-February.

The surgery was deemed successful, as the doctor inserted a screw in Tsannehill's foot that is expected to eliminate any problems moving forward. He resumed pre-Combine training with former Panthers quarterback Chris Weinke. He was unable to work out in Indianapolis, but is expected to be fully recovered by his pro day on March 29th.
