OVERVIEW

It is a rare occurrence when a basketball player goes on to have great success on the gridiron later in his career, despite the recent trend of "unearthing" these fine athletes by National Football League teams. The most successful presently playing in the league are tight ends Antonio Gates (San Diego), Tony Gonzalez (Atlanta) and Jimmy Graham (New Orleans), and defensive end Julius Peppers (Chicago).

Gates played basketball at Kent State, where he guided the Golden Flashes to a magical berth in the "Elite Eight" at the 2002 NCAA Tournament, while he averaged 16 points per game. The following season, he averaged 20.6 points per game. Gonzalez averaged 6.8 points and 5.4 rebounds for California during his junior season, as the Golden Bears advanced all the way to the "Sweet Sixteen" at the 1997 NCAA Tournament.

Graham was never much of a scorer, but he was a superb rebounder and one of the top shot blockers during his career at the University of Miami. In fact, Graham ranks eighth in school history in blocks (108). Peppers was an invaluable sixth-man for one of college basketball's elite programs at North Carolina, where he averaged 7.1 points and four rebounds per game off the bench, before going on to terrorize NFL quarterbacks.

Based on his performances "in cleats" during his last eight games, the Jackrabbits might have the next standout athlete ready to embark on a fruitful NFL career in Dale Moss, a four-year letterman for the university's basketball team who is enjoying using his fifth year of college eligibility to establish himself as one of the emerging 2012 NFL Draft prospects and an elite receiver at the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision level.

After seeing limited action in the first two games of the 2011 schedule, Moss went on a tear. In three of his last four games, he amassed at least 100 receiving yards, as he produced two touchdown grabs in each of two of those contests, recording a total of four 100-yard efforts for the season. In addition to his six touchdowns, he came up with crucial receptions that set up 17 touchdown drives and on two possessions that resulted in field goals.

Moss registered 47 first downs among his 61 catches, as he went on to convert 14 third-down tosses targeted to him, making another 15 catches inside the red zone, including six on goal-line plays. Thirty-three of his receptions gained at least 10 yards, with 13 totaling 20 yards or longer. He has also proven to be quite instinctive on the field, as he posted three tackles of opposing defenders that intercepted SDSU passes.

Quietly putting together a banner season for a team that struggled to a 5-6 record, Moss' 80-yard touchdown catch vs. Missouri State is the longest reception by a Jackrabbit since the university left the NCAA Division II ranks for competition at the Division I level after the 2007 season. The split end's 178 yards receiving vs. Missouri State ranks seventh on the school game-record list and is the most yardage by a receiver in a contest since Josh Davis totaled 187 yards vs. North Dakota on Oct. 11, 2003.

Moss closed out the season tied for the team lead with Aaron Rollin in receptions, as their 61 grabs rank eighth on the school season-record list. His 949 receiving yards rank fifth on the Jackrabbits' annual record chart. For a player that spent four seasons away from the game and did not join the football team until 2011 spring camp, he has also shown sure hands, dropping just one of 97 passes targeted to him.

Prior to his arrival at South Dakota State, Moss was a three-sport standout at Brandon Valley High School, where he lettered in basketball, football and track for the Lynx. On the gridiron, the team captain competed as a wide receiver and defensive back for head coach Curt Littau, earning All-Eastern South Dakota Football League first-team honors in each of his last two seasons, as he collected 89 passes for 1,125 yards combined, as a junior and senior.

He was named All-State selection as a senior, in addition to being selected to the Argus Leader Elite-45 squad after setting school season-records with 45 receptions (573 yards) and ten touchdowns. The Lynx compiled an 8-4 record in 2006, finishing second in the Eastern South Dakota Football League to rank 12th in the state.

In basketball, Moss also served as squad captain, as the guard averaged 18 points, seven rebounds and four assists his senior year, as he helped the team finish first in the Class AA District II ranks and earned a ranking of fourth in the state with a 23-2 overall record. The team Most Valuable Player was chosen Gatorade and South Dakota High School Activities Association Player of the Year in 2007.

The two-time All-State hoops selection shot 56.65% from the floor (115-for-203) as a junior and averaged 15.2 points and 5.2 rebounds per game that season, leading the Lynx to a fourth place finish at the state AA tournament. He added team MVP honors and was named to the Sioux Falls Argus Leader First-Five, in addition to becoming the three-class shootout slam-dunk champion. He also guided the track team to the conference title, as the Honor Roll student finished fourth at the state meet in the long jump as a senior. He was named the Lynx Award winner, the highest honor a Brandon Valley athlete can earn.

Forsaking football upon his arrival at South Dakota State, Moss started 4 of 28 games he played in for the Jackrabbits basketball team in 2007-08. He logged 375 minutes of action, shooting .457 from the field (37 of 81 FGs) and .632 from the charity stripe. He averaged 2.2 rebounds, 3.5 points and handed out 22 assists from his two-guard position.

As a sophomore, Moss started seven times while appearing in 32 contests. He made 67 of 129 field goals (.519), including 4 of 6 treys, improving his free throw success (.737) from the previous season in 2008-09. He secured 117 boards (3.7 rpg) to go with 13 blocked shots, finishing with a 6.1-point scoring average. In 2009-10, he started 15 of 30 games, compiling averages of 4.9 points and 3.8 rebounds per game, as he blocked 15 shots, made 50-of-111 field goals (.450) and 69.2% of his chances from the foul line.

Moss had a banner final season for the hoops squad in 2010-11, starting all 31 games, as he finished with career-best averages of 24.9 minutes, 4.5 rebounds and 7.6 points per game. He shot .539 from the field (89-of-165), making eleven three-pointers while dishing out 55 assists with 20 steals and 17 blocked shots.

While performing with the basketball team, the football staff saw great potential in Moss, especially with his tremendous leaping ability and toughness crashing the boards vs. men much bigger than him. He was convinced to join the football team for 2011 spring drills, making the squad as a split end (X receiver). He would go on to join fellow receiver Aaron Rollin and redshirt freshman quarterback Austin Sumner in giving the Jackrabbits an extremely dangerous aerial attack, as the team led the Missouri Valley Football Conference and ranked 10th in the nation in passing, averaging 294.6 yards per game.
