Offensive Tackle

#76

Rosemount, Minnesota
Rosemount High School

OVERVIEW

Having completed his second season at the demanding left offensive tackle position, Tom Compton was a mainstay on the Coyotes front wall ever since stepping on the field as a red-shirt freshman. He began his USD tenure manning the right tackle slot, shifting to the left side as a junior. The fifth-year senior has garnered considerable attention from National Football League scouts due to his impressive athleticism and model of consistency on the field.

In his last 32 games, Compton produced 270 knockdowns/key blocks (8.44 per game), along with 30 downfield blocks. The Coyotes have produced 51 scoring drives by their ground game during that span, with their versatile tackle accounting for 40 of those touchdown-resulting blocks (78.43%). The front wall allowed a total of 68 quarterback sacks during those contests, but just 1.5 sacks have come over the senior's assigned area, spanning 870 passing plays.

Compton's blocking consistency grade of 89.00% is the highest among active blockers in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision, impressing talent evaluators with his all-around skills. He further cemented his elite status by running 5.08 in the 40-yard dash during USD's spring Pro Day in 2011, and the tackle has boasted times as low as 4.92, along with showing a well-built frame that lost no quickness, despite adding close to sixty pounds of bulk since enrolling at South Dakota prior to the 2007 season. That speed has allowed the coaches to utilize him much like the Chicago Bears did with William "Refrigerator" Perry, as a lead-blocking fullback out of the backfield, on short-yardage situations.

During his days at Rosemount High School in Minnesota, Compton started as a junior and senior on the offensive line for head coach Jeff Erdmann. After compiling a 3-7 record during his sophomore campaign, he helped the Irish improve to 9-4 as a senior, as they ranked seventh in the state, capturing the second title and going on to the state playoffs.

The All-Lake Football League choice also lined up at defensive tackle, but it was his blocking skills that proved invaluable. In the season opener vs. Jefferson, he delivered a crunching downfield block on a 61-yard touchdown jaunt by QB Josh Schoaf. He knocked down All-State defensive end Josh Keller to spring Ben Leake for a 10-yard score, as Compton made three touchdown-resulting blocks vs. Eagan.

The offensive tackle's 2006 campaign also saw him open a rush lane used by Jon Walsh for a 14-yard touchdown run vs. Kennedy. The team ran for 268 of its 355 yards over Compton's area in a 31-24 decision over Mayo, with the senior leading the charge on scoring bursts of 14 yards by Schoaf and 36 yards by Walsh. He also showed off his pass protection skills vs. Farmington, knocking down a pair of defenders on a 23-yard TD-toss from Schoaf to Dylan Bothun and also posting a second level block to spring Schoaf for a 73-yard touchdown run in that clash.

Compton red-shirted at South Dakota in 2007, but he emerged from a fierce 2008 pre-season camp battle vs. Scott Slotten as the Coyotes' new starting right tackle. In USD's final season at the Division II level, he helped the squad lead the North Central Conference and rank seventh in the nation in rushing (240.09 ypg), ninth in total offense (455.64 ypg) and 12th in scoring (37.45 ppg).

South Dakota moved up to the NCAA FCS ranks (provisional) in 2009, playing a 10-game schedule. He was named All-Great West Conference honorable mention, as he started all year at right tackle. He recorded ten touchdown-resulting blocks and graded 85.0% for blocking consistency, as the Coyotes averaged 460.3 yards per game behind an offensive line that yielded only ten sacks.

Compton shifted to left tackle for the 2010 season, earning All-American recognition while being named first-team All-Great West Conference. The recipient of the team's Most Valuable Lineman Award totaled 94 knockdowns, 13 touchdown-resulting blocks and led the Football Championship Subdivision offensive linemen with a blocking consistency grade of 89.92%.

The 2011 All-American showed professional scouts why many regard him as the best blocker in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision ranks. Even though the Coyotes had to face FCS powerhouse Eastern Washington, a dominant Wisconsin team and Lindenwood, an NAIA championship caliber squad performing in the NCAA Division II ranks in 2011, the left tackle recorded a Great West Conference-leading 101 knockdowns/ key blocks with seventeen touchdown-resulting blocks and eleven blocks down field, recording the first "perfect" blocking performance in league annals, when he closed out his career with a 100% mark in the North Dakota clash.
