OVERVIEW

Confirming Morris Claiborne's status as college football's best cornerback, the 2011 Jim Thorpe Award winner marked the second consecutive season that a Tiger captured the award, following his former teammate, Patrick Peterson. The duo formed the premier cornerback tandem two years ago, with Claiborne then being joined by Tyrann Mathieu in 2011 to carry on that title for Louisiana State.

Much like Peterson, Claiborne not only excelled in man coverage, but his ability to handle kick return duties added to his already impressive resume. His Velcro-like hands also helped establish the junior as one of the best pass thieves in the collegiate game. In two seasons as a starter, the original wide receiver recruit has registered 11 interceptions, tied for sixth in school history. Those pass thefts were returned for 274 yards, the second-highest career total by a Tiger.

Claiborne's average of 24.91 yards per interception return ranks seventh in Southeastern Conference annals. The Thorpe Award winner tied for seventh on LSU's season-record chart with his six interceptions in 2011, as his 173 yards in returns placed third on the school annual record chart. While those figures should serve as a forewarning for opponents, offensive coordinators could not game-plan for the Tiger, who would line up at either cornerback position or nickel back, depending on the situation, from play-to-play.

The thing you first notice about Claiborne on the field is his exceptional body control, as he has the sudden quickness and foot movement to get back on his man in a hurry when a receiver happens to get behind him. He shows very good agility and balance in his running stride and has the ability to instantly change direction without having to gather or throttle down.

The Tigers defender has quick hands and reactionary ability going up for the ball in flight, using his reach well to get up and around the receiver to compete for the thrown pass at its high point. He has the loose hips and explosive second gear to recover and shows very good hand placement that he utilizes with force in man coverage (excels in the bump-&-run).

Claiborne is fluid and smooth running to the ball and has that natural ability all great cornerbacks need when redirecting and flipping his hips. He is very adept at making quick reads and reacting to the action in front of him. Much like Tampa Bay's Ronde Barber, he is very good at anticipating the receiver's body movements.

Claiborne is not the type that quarterbacks will fool with misdirection or play action, as he excels at jumping routes because of his ability to read the eyes of the passer. He has that timing and feel needed to make plays on the ball in flight and is quick to react when he sees the play develop. There is no hesitation in his game, as he does not need time to digest the action because of his ability to distinguish between run and pass plays. He does a fine job of reading routes and altering his assignments progression, as he flies to the ball in an instant.

During his playing days at Fair Park High School in Shreveport, Claiborne started at quarterback, defensive back and wide receiver. He accounted for more than 2,000 all-purpose yards and 30 touchdowns as a quarterback during his senior campaign and was rated the 28th-best athlete in the nation by ESPNU.

Claiborne received a three-star recruit grade and was ranked 21st on the Rivals.com Louisiana Top 75 List in 2008. Scout.com also regarded him as a three-star prospect, rating him 90th among the nation's wide receivers.

Even though the Indians finished 4-7 in his final season, the senior earned Class 4A All-District I, Super Prep Louisiana Top 40, New Orleans Times-Picayune Blue-Chip and Baton Rouge Advocate's Super Dozen honors. In 2008, Claiborne threw for 1,009 yards and 14 touchdowns while rushing for 1,023 yards and sixteen more scores. The three-time All-District offensive selection also earned postseason honors as a defensive back.

In addition to his success on the gridiron, he also lettered in basketball, baseball and track. He was named Shreveport-Bossier Male High School Athlete of the Year by the Shreveport Times as a sophomore. In track, he captured the Class 4A state title in the 100-meters with a 10.76 clocking in 2009.

Claiborne signed his national letter of intent to attend Louisiana State on Nov. 11, 2008. The athlete was also offered scholarships from Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana Tech, Nebraska, Texas A&M and Tulane.

Originally recruited to play on offense as a receiver, the incoming freshman stated upon his arrival on campus, "I have the ability to jump up and get the ball. I can break tackles for the short yards and make big things happen when I have the ball. I'm like Terrell Owens. But I want to improve my route running. I want to run smoother routes and work on my feet."

Claiborne would never get the opportunity to catch any passes as a Tiger, though. He entered fall camp with the offensive unit, but in mid-August, at the urging of teammate Patrick Peterson, who implored the coaches to move Claiborne to the secondary, the move was made and the freshman's bright future would soon begin to take shape.

For a player who was heavily involved in game action throughout his gridiron career, being limited to reserve duty for seven games in 2009 would have frustrated most fresh-man, but Claiborne accepted the challenge without complaint or hesitation. He recorded just seven tackles that season, but gave the staff flashes of the brilliance to come during practices.

With Peterson serving as a mentor, the duo quickly became the best cornerback tandem in college during the 2010 season. While overshadowed by his junior running mate, who would capture the Jim Thorpe Award a year before Claiborne would in 2011, the Fair Park High product started all 12 games at left cornerback. The All-Southeastern Conference selection recorded 37 tackles and deflected six passes while ranking third in the SEC with five interceptions.

With Peterson starring for the Arizona Cardinals, it was Claiborne's time to shine in 2011. The Thorpe Award winner and consensus All-American had a new cornerback mate in Tyrann Matthieu and that tandem proved to be even more effective that the Tigers' previous duo. The LSU secondary allowed 15 touchdown passes in 2010 and ranked 10th in the nation in pass defense. The new duo paced a unit that had just seven passes caught for scores and finished eighth nationally in pass defense.

Claiborne produced 51 tackles (32 solos) in 14 games, ranking 12th in the nation with 11 passes defended, as he amassed 183 yards with a touchdown on six pass thefts. Following in Peterson's footsteps, he also took over kickoff return chores, adding one more touchdown to his 2011 resume while averaging 25.09 yards on 22 runbacks.

The cornerback announced that he would not be returning to school in 2012 and had decided to play in the National Football League instead. He celebrated his birthday before attending the 2012 NFL Scouting Combine when he was honored as the Jim Thorpe Award at a dinner in early February.

"It's an award that's representative of all the right things about college football," LSU coach Les Miles said. "The recipient is a team player, hard-working, not a ready-made guy. He came in not highly recruited, but he worked hard, is humble and had a penchant for big plays."

One of the most unassuming players in the draft, even on a day for celebration, the cornerback made sure he had work to do first. Claiborne started his day with 45 minutes of treadmill and pool work. Ken Prude, who was one of Claiborne's high school coaches back in Shreveport, says the cornerback's commitment has been evident since high school.

"You could see it, and hope for it, and you see his work ethic and you'd think there was a possibility, but to this level right now, it's beyond what we imagined," Prude said. "He's low-key and humble and a good guy."

While he has yet to receive the media attention that Peterson earned last year and lacking the colorful nickname of his 2011 teammate, Tyrann Matheiu, the "honey badger," the junior cornerback has no problem living away from the limelight.

"I feel like I've been flying under the radar since high school," Claiborne said. "If some-body was to have a conversation and the conversation was about me, I was always the type to try to change the subject because I can't stand all that attention."

Talking about being a potential early first-round draft pick and enjoying the professional football success that Patrick Peterson enjoyed in 2011, Claiborne said, "It's amazing, but that's the type of thing you work for. You work to put yourself in those types of positions."
